Position Overview
The Avon Maitland District School Board is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Sign Language Interpreter. This position is crucial in ensuring access and support for students who are Deaf and/or hard of hearing, facilitating effective communication within the classroom and school environment using American Sign Language (ASL).
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver ASL interpretation services to students in regular classroom settings, enabling them to:
- Engage with the Ontario Curriculum during instructional periods.
- Participate in school activities throughout the day, including field trips and assemblies.
- Facilitate communication within the school environment for identified students.
- Convey auditory information to ensure safety, such as announcements and emergency drills.
- Support the school team in fostering an inclusive learning atmosphere for Deaf students by:
- Recognizing the classroom teacher's role as the primary educator for academic goals.
- Assisting in the implementation of instructional and assessment accommodations.
- Identifying opportunities for students to enhance their ASL vocabulary based on curriculum content.
- Creating and facilitating peer interaction opportunities to promote relationships.
- Encouraging respectful learning environments while maintaining student dignity.
- Engaging in collaboration with the school team.
- Provide ASL interpreting services upon request from the school team.
- Participate in meetings as required, contributing to discussions with various educational teams.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the System Principal of Learning Services.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
- Minimum three (3) year College Diploma in ASL-English Interpreting; a University Degree is an asset.
- Active membership in good standing with the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI) is preferred.
- Proven expressive and receptive ASL skills.
- Strong spoken and written English communication abilities.
- Experience working as an interpreter with school-aged children.
- Understanding of educational practices and the role of interpreters in the educational team.
- Commitment to promoting equitable and inclusive education for all students.
- Adherence to the CASLI Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Professional Conduct.
Compensation and Benefits
Rate of Pay: $26.11 per hour, increasing to $27.11 per hour at a specified future date.
Hours of Work: 35 hours per week, 10 months per year.
Pension Plan: Defined pension plan available.
