About the Opportunity

We are seeking a skilled Health Information Specialist to join our team at Nova Scotia Health and IWK Health. As a key member of our health information management team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of patient health information.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing accurate coding and abstraction of inpatient, day surgery, and emergency health information. This will involve working closely with our clinical teams to ensure that health information is collected, maintained, and reported in a responsible and knowledgeable way.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide accurate coding and abstraction of health information
  • Work closely with clinical teams to ensure accurate and timely health information
  • Monitor data quality and prepare submissions for CIHI and other specialty programs
  • Contribute to quality, patient safety, decision making, and planning of health care services

Requirements:

  • Successful completion of a 2-3 year diploma from a recognized Canada Health Information Management Association recognized program
  • Certified with the Canadian College of Health Information Management and hold active certified membership in good standing with Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA)
  • Knowledge of National and Provincial legislation and NSHA/Area policies that govern Confidentiality, Privacy, and security of health information
  • 2 years of coding experience in the health information management field
  • Commitment to ongoing learning and professional development, including completion of 36 continuing education credits every three years post-graduation
  • Current knowledge of data collection standards, including Canadian Institute of Health Information standards
  • Knowledge of health information systems, including 3M, Discharge Abstract Database, National Ambulatory Care Reporting System, and ADT system (MEDITECH/STAR)
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills and good judgment
  • Demonstrated attention to detail
  • Demonstrated communication, interpersonal, collaboration, and teamwork skills
  • Demonstrated accountability, initiative, and ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated planning, organizing, prioritizing, and time management skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Lync, and Outlook calendar
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
