Position Overview
The Clinical Pathology Specialist plays a crucial role in the examination and analysis of human tissue samples under the guidance of a certified Pathologist. This position is integral in assisting with the identification and diagnosis of various medical conditions. The specialist will provide both technical and administrative support to laboratory personnel and other departments, contributing to the overarching research objectives of the institution.
Core Responsibilities
- Lead the gross examination of surgical tissue samples to align with the research objectives of the institution.
- Consult with Pathologists to balance research requirements with diagnostic needs, ensuring judicious selection of specimens for both research and patient care.
- Independently perform gross examinations on diverse tissue types, including complex surgical resections, while accurately documenting specimen details.
- Manage and maintain the integrity of data within the tissue retrieval database.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, including HIPAA and Institutional Review Board standards, while handling pathology reports and maintaining necessary records.
- Coordinate the retrieval of tissue samples for the institution's biorepository, guiding technicians in proper procedures for data collection and labeling.
- Conduct frozen sectioning of tissue samples for immediate diagnostic purposes.
- Collaborate with principal investigators and study coordinators to facilitate the retrieval of samples for specific research initiatives.
- Stay informed about active research protocols that require human tissue samples, applying this knowledge in daily operations.
- Review quality assurance processes for tissue retrieval in collaboration with certified Pathologists.
- Document and photograph selected gross specimens for educational and research purposes.
- Identify and track surgical specimens needing special preparation before external laboratory shipping.
- Develop and implement training programs for pathology residents and provide demonstrations for medical students and other trainees.
- Maintain the surgical gross cutting room, ensuring that supplies and instruments are adequately stocked and maintained.
- Adhere to all safety and compliance standards relevant to surgical pathology and tissue retrieval services.
- Prepare and update pathology grossing manuals as necessary.
- Engage in continuous professional development to maintain board certification and enhance knowledge in surgical pathology practices.
- Exemplify corporate integrity and customer service while promoting quality improvements.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- A Master's Degree or equivalent in a scientific discipline is required.
- A minimum of three years of relevant experience or graduation from an accredited Pathologists' Assistants program is necessary.
- Certification as a Pathologist Assistant from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) is required within the first year of employment.
Skills and Competencies
- Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite and database management tools.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to effectively convey complex information and ideas to diverse audiences.
- Capability to present information clearly in both individual and small group settings.
- Commitment to meeting all regulatory requirements associated with the role.
Work Environment
This position operates within a laboratory setting, which may involve exposure to biological materials and hazardous substances. Adherence to safety protocols is mandatory.
