Data Engineering Director

Loblaw Digital is seeking a visionary Data Engineering Director to spearhead the development and operation of our cutting-edge technology platform. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for driving innovation and excellence in data engineering, machine learning, and business intelligence.
The Impact You'll MakeYou will play a pivotal role in accelerating our digital transformation by providing strategic direction and technical leadership to our data analytics, machine learning platform, and business intelligence teams. Your expertise will be instrumental in building a best-in-class technology platform, leveraging robust cloud-native ML Ops capabilities and state-of-the-art ML integrated throughout the application.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and manage a high-performing team of developers, M/L engineers, and analysts.
- Drive initiatives to bring best practices and cutting-edge thinking to our data engineering practice.
- Collaborate with product teams and other tech directors to ensure the ML Ops platform meets the highest standards of operational excellence.
- Work closely with the data science team to provide the necessary tooling and support for maximizing the business impact of machine learning.
- Partner with business and product teams to empower reporting and data literacy across the organization.
- Lead web analytics and marketing intelligence teams to map customer behavior and derive actionable insights.
- Work with the SRE organization, security, and privacy groups to ensure data governance and access control are implemented robustly and scalable.
- Drive a culture of engineering excellence within the Data Platform and Business Intelligence teams.
- Provide mentorship and subject matter expertise to team members.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g., Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science).
- Expertise in SQL and hands-on experience with software development (preferably Java or Python, ideally both).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience with cloud, M/L, and Big Data technologies (AWS, GCP, Azure, Hadoop ecosystem, Spark, Kafka, Seldon, etc.).
- Familiarity with modern SDLC practices and agile methodologies.
- Solid understanding of data modeling fundamentals and their impact on data sources, usability, and warehouse design.
- Ability to take initiative, multitask, and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong attention to detail is essential in this role.
