Position Overview
The Division of Animal Care at Dalhousie University is dedicated to delivering expert veterinary services and oversight for the Animal Care facilities associated with the Faculty of Medicine. Under the supervision of the Managers of the Carleton Animal Care Facility or LSRI Animal Care Facility, the Animal Care Technicians will collaborate within a team to execute technical and husbandry responsibilities for various species, including rodents.
Primary Responsibilities
- Conduct daily health assessments and welfare evaluations of animals, submitting health reports to the veterinarian. Provide nursing care for surgical and research animal models, including administering medications and performing diagnostic or therapeutic procedures as instructed by the veterinarian.
- Prepare surgical setups, anesthetic apparatus, and sterilize surgical instruments and materials as required.
- Maintain comprehensive records related to animal care, including treatment logs, breeding documentation, veterinary medical records, and medication logs.
- Offer guidance and support to researchers regarding animal care practices, medical procedures, and the use of specialized equipment, including rodent colony management.
- Engage in the post-approval monitoring program established by Dalhousie University.
- Ensure daily husbandry tasks are completed, including providing food, water, bedding, and environmental enrichment, while adhering to established protocols. Maintain sanitation and upkeep of animal housing and equipment according to standard operating procedures.
Additional Information
This position requires in-person attendance on campus due to operational needs. The work schedule typically runs from Sunday to Thursday, including regular weekend shifts, which may vary based on operational demands. The Division of Animal Care operates year-round, thus holiday and weekend shifts may be necessary. Compensation will align with the collective agreement, and compliance with health and safety regulations is expected.
Qualifications
- Completion of a Registered Veterinary Technician diploma from a CVMA accredited program.
- One to three years of relevant experience in a similar role.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, along with effective interpersonal abilities.
- Demonstrated organizational capabilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification from the CALAS Registry Board Examination (RLAT).
- Experience in laboratory animal care.
- Proficiency in computer applications.
