Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Transportation Engineer to join our team at the City of Toronto. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for planning, designing, and implementing transportation infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement process and program solutions to improve transportation infrastructure
  • Provide technical advice and expertise to support the operation and maintenance of transportation facilities and equipment
  • Conduct engineering analysis and evaluate new technologies to improve transportation performance
  • Plan, investigate, and prepare reports and recommendations on engineering problems of moderate complexity
  • Manage assigned municipal operation construction contracts and operations, ensuring effective teamwork and communication
  • Responsible for the day-to-day management of Winter Servicing Contracts, including site and contractual issues
  • Undertake the testing and implementation of design concepts to meet functional requirements
  • Conduct studies, surveys, research, and development for the effective solution of engineering issues
  • Direct project teams to ensure timelines are met and administer contracts
  • Formulate design concepts for engineering problems and set the scope and parameters for design projects
  • Prepare and inspect drawings, specifications, plans, and cost estimates for transportation infrastructure projects
  • Direct assigned multidisciplinary projects, coordinating input from various City staff
  • Review estimates, prepare tenders, and evaluate bids for transportation infrastructure projects
  • Prepare Committee reports for different types of contracts
  • Assist in the preparation of the Division's Operations budget
  • Coordinate task forces and technical committees in the preparation of standards, guidelines, and policies
  • Secure engineering permits and approvals from external agencies and perform field inspections
  • Direct multidisciplinary teams of consultants and ensure project expenditures are controlled
  • Conduct research into assigned areas, ensuring that research/analysis takes into account developments within the field, corporate policies, and practices
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of technological developments in the field of engineering and associated/related fields
  • Represent the Division on internal and external Committees, attending meetings and providing input and feedback
  • Evaluate and assess the condition of the City's roadway network, including pavements, boulevards, and sidewalks
  • Implement complex financial analysis related to the roadway network and determine Capital requirements
  • Ensure compliance with OHSA and communicate with public, stakeholders, and councillors about projects, programs, and developments
  • Respond to public letters of complaint and inquiry on behalf of senior management
Key Qualifications
  • University degree in Civil Engineering or an approved combination of education and experience
  • Must be registered as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng) in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO)
  • Considerable experience in the planning, design, tendering, and contract administration of municipal infrastructure projects
  • Experience applying the principles of civil engineering, including methods and materials specific to construction of municipal infrastructure
  • Experience in planning, supervising, and directing the work of staff, contractors, and consultants
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License with the ability to qualify for a City of Toronto fleet permit
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Construction Lien Act and related legislation
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and other software applications
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate at all organizational levels
  • Well-developed written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement and skill in handling technical and non-technical matters
  • Ability to work effectively with contractors, colleagues, provincial officials, consultants, other internal and external clients, and in a unionized environment
  • Ability to work beyond normal business hours and on weekends and statutory holidays when necessary
