Zurich Canada's Middle Market business is thriving, and we're looking for a talented Senior Underwriter to join our team. As a key player in our Eastern region, you'll be responsible for building strong relationships with brokers, providing exceptional customer service, and delivering innovative commercial insurance solutions.

As a Senior Underwriter, Middle Market, you'll have the opportunity to shape your portfolio of accounts within our broader Middle Market strategy. You'll utilize The Zurich Way of Underwriting, working within your delegated authority to ensure a high level of accountability and service to customers. Key Responsibilities
  1. Advocate for the Middle Market value proposition, focusing on improving the customer experience by understanding their risks and offering tailored insurance solutions.
  2. Develop and nurture broker networks related to mid-market customers, targeting industries outlined in our business strategy.
  3. Make broker calls with a planned and well-prepared purpose, promoting our products and services to increase penetration.
  4. Identify opportunities through local relationships, proactively seeking renewal and new account opportunities to drive growth and profitability in our Middle Market portfolio.
  5. Apply a disciplined approach to exposure evaluation, risk assessment, and pricing.
  6. Qualify accounts that align with our business strategy and appetite, balancing sound business opportunity with risk management.
  7. Measure exposure and analyze opportunities to provide appropriate coverage, adhering to our risk and compliance processes.
  8. Apply rating tools and methodologies to deliver tailored solutions to customers, offering suggestions for improvements.
  9. Use risk insights and analytical tools to drive informed decisions at the point of sale.
  10. Work within limits and delegated authorities, adhering to underwriting rules, guidelines, compliance protocols, and insurance regulations.
  11. Apply best practices and provide insights to continuously develop and improve underwriting systems and processes.
  12. Upsell additional coverages associated with the Middle Market product suite, offering a comprehensive package solution.
  13. Cross-sell other lines of business to increase product density with the account, providing a comprehensive Zurich solution.
  14. Understand customer needs, challenges, and market dynamics to initiate Middle Market product solutions for development.
  15. Demonstrate key aspects of portfolio management, considering performance metrics, data, and insights to improve the portfolio and drive diversified growth.
  16. Ensure strong partnership with Underwriting Services team members to engage with brokers and provide best-in-industry customer service, focusing on timeliness and accuracy of quotes, policy issuance, and premium booking.
  17. Mentor less experienced underwriters and support training initiatives, as required.
  18. Hone individual skill sets and product knowledge, demonstrating senior underwriting level expertise, to become a trusted advisor to Middle Market brokers and customers.
Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 4 or more years of experience in Underwriting or Market Facing area.
  • OR High School Diploma or Equivalent and 6 or more years of experience in Claims.
  • Knowledge of lines of business and legal and regulatory guidelines.
  • Knowledge of the insurance industry and legal and regulatory environment.
  • Knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, pricing, and guideline requirements.
  • Experience working on time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
  • Experience working in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree with 4 or more years' experience in commercial P&C underwriting area.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Microsoft Office skills.
  • French language skills.
  • Verbal and written proficiency in English language required for internal and external key stakeholders outside of Quebec.
