Patient Care Aide, Medical Inpatient

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Patient Care Aide to join our team at BC Children's Hospital. As a Patient Care Aide, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional care to our patients and their families.
Key Responsibilities- Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with patients/clients/families and provide support following established care plans.
- Assist in the delivery of nursing care under the functional direction of a Registered Nurse and perform duties such as recording of vital signs, administering dressings, and assisting with personal hygiene.
- Respond to call bells/alarms and assist as necessary, and respond to emergent situations by calling appropriate code and assisting care team in accordance with unit/program guidelines.
- Observe and monitor patient/client progress, symptoms, and behavioral changes and report significant observations to the Registered Nurse or designate.
- Utilize mechanical aides to transport clients and provide assistance with positioning, lifting, and/or transferring clients using established lifting/safety techniques.
- Maintain a clean and safe environment, ensure call light/bell is within reach, make beds, apply side-rail requirements, and handle workplace hazardous materials according to procedures.
- Maintain supplies in utility areas, supply cupboards, resident washrooms, bedside tables, and storage areas, and check supply sheets to identify items and quantities required.
- Prepare room for discharge cleaning and/or assist in room setup, remove bed linen, and forward to laundry, make beds, empty/clean fridge/s, and remove extra supplies in accordance with established procedures.
- Participate in team discussions and/or related training sessions, attend meetings to provide/receive information, and provide input regarding improvements to client care and the efficient and safe operation of the area.
- Retrieve lab results and patient information from Hospital systems as required, and perform related clerical duties such as answering telephones, providing general information, and maintaining patient flow.
- Grade 10 plus graduation from a recognized Nursing Assistant Program or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Registration with the BC Care Aide Registry.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to organize work and prioritize workload.
- Ability to deal with others effectively.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
- Commitment to develop knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments found in the foundational documents, including Truth & Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan, and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study.
