Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Medical Inpatient Care Assistant to join our team at BC Children's Hospital. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will provide exceptional patient care and support to our young patients and their families.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with patients/clients/families and provide support following established care plans.
  • Assist in the delivery of nursing care under the functional direction of a Registered Nurse and perform duties such as recording of vital signs, administering dressings, and assisting with personal hygiene.
  • Respond to call bells/alarms and assist as necessary, and respond to emergent situations by calling appropriate code and assisting care team in accordance with unit/program guidelines.
  • Observe and monitor patient/client progress, symptoms and behavioural changes and report significant observations to the Registered Nurse or designate.
  • Utilize mechanical aides to transport clients and provide assistance with positioning, lifting and/or transferring clients.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment, ensure call light/bell is within reach, make beds, and apply side-rail requirements.
  • Maintain supplies in utility areas, supply cupboards, resident washrooms, bedside tables and storage areas, and check supply sheets to identify items and quantities required.
  • Prepare room for discharge cleaning and/or assist in room setup, remove bed linen and forward to laundry, make beds, and empty/clean fridge/s and remove extra supplies in accordance with established procedures.
  • Participate in team discussions and/or related training sessions, attend meetings to provide/receive information, and provide input regarding improvements to client care and the efficient and safe operation of the area.
  • Retrieve lab results and patient information from Hospital systems as required, and perform related clerical duties such as answering telephones, providing general information, and maintaining patient flow.

Requirements

  • Grade 10 plus graduation from a recognized Nursing Assistant Program or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Registration with the BC Care Aide Registry.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and ability to organize work and prioritize workload.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively, and ability to operate related equipment.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position, and commitment to develop knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments found in the foundational documents.
