Spark Power Corp, a reputable leader in the energy sector across North America, is seeking a Senior Protection & Control Technologist to enhance our Alberta operations. The primary responsibility of this role involves the programming, testing, and verification of protection and control devices in the field. This position plays a crucial role in the testing, commissioning, and maintenance of power distribution systems. The successful candidate will engage with clients and construction teams, with travel requirements of approximately 70-80% of the time.

Key Responsibilities of the Senior Protection & Control Technologist at Spark Power:

  • Adhere to safety protocols to ensure the well-being of yourself and your colleagues.
  • Comprehend, plan, and implement utility and industry-standard lockout procedures.
  • Analyze and interpret electrical AC and DC schematics, three-line diagrams, logic diagrams, and single line diagrams (SLDs).
  • Conduct inspections, tests, operations, and troubleshooting of AC and DC control and protection wiring schematics.
  • Execute field testing, verification, and programming of various Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) from manufacturers including SEL, GE Multilin, GEC Alstom, Siemens, Square D, and ABB.
  • Maintain or commission power distribution equipment such as power transformers, circuit breakers, high voltage switches, and instrument transformers.
  • Familiarize yourself with industry-specific codes and standards (AESO, AUEC, IEEE, and NETA).
  • Exhibit a willingness to travel 70-80% of the time for commissioning or maintenance projects.
  • Document, record, compute, and process electrical test data in accordance with established standard practices.
  • Oversee daily operations on a project-by-project basis, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, availability of necessary resources, conflict resolution, and timely submission of documentation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience: 3 to 5 years in Protection & Control.
  • Education: 2-year Electrical Engineering Technology diploma (from NAIT or SAIT) or a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Licenses: Registered or eligible for registration with ASET or APEGA.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to convey information effectively.
  • Critical Thinking: Proficient in using logic and reasoning to evaluate alternative solutions and approaches to problems.
  • Leadership: Capable of providing technical guidance.
