A day in the life:
- Conduct laboratory tests adhering to industry and WSP standards, focusing on tailings material, including material characterization, rheology, dewatering, and unconfined compressive strength testing.
- Demonstrate expertise in tailings testing and mentor junior staff in executing these procedures.
- Provide leadership within the laboratory, collaborating with the laboratory supervisor to guide staff across various experience levels in daily operations.
- Review test results to ensure precise and accurate data collection.
- Participate in the laboratory quality control program, assisting the laboratory supervisor with audits.
- Work closely with project managers to define the scope and objectives of test programs, ensuring alignment with project goals.
- Contribute to the development of test programs tailored to client needs.
- Assist in the preparation of reports and proposals.
- Monitor laboratory expenses, labor, and materials.
- A completed post-secondary education in Civil, Chemical, or Metallurgical Engineering/Technology or a related field.
- A minimum of 12 years of experience in tailings materials testing, including rheology, dewatering, and unconfined compressive strength.
- In-depth knowledge of standardized laboratory testing procedures (ASTM, AASHTO, CSA).
- Strong time management, organizational, independent thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- A proven ability to lead and direct staff while collaborating with project teams.
- Capability to address conflicting priorities among different project teams and facilitate resolutions.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple tasks and assignments effectively.
- Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) for data entry, interpretation, and report generation.
- A willingness to travel (nationally and internationally) to support field programs is advantageous.
- A strong understanding of health and safety protocols in the workplace, with a safety-conscious mindset.
- Current First Aid and WHMIS training will be considered an asset.
