VIA Rail is embarking on significant initiatives to enhance its services and infrastructure. As part of our commitment to sustainable transportation, we are looking for a dedicated professional to join our team.
In this role, reporting to the Director of Corporate Accounting and Taxation, you will play a crucial part in corporate accounting, commodity taxes, and tax-related projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Corporate Taxation:
- Manage monthly and quarterly tax remittances and their accounting processes.
- Coordinate tax provision and annual tax return activities with external advisors.
- Assist the Director in implementing new tax regulations and provide necessary training to colleagues.
Support for Commodity Tax Team:
- Assist in the timely submission of various tax returns (GST/QST, PST, fuel, and carbon taxes).
- Review documentation to ensure completeness and proper documentation of exemptions.
- Support the tax team during audits by providing necessary documentation and following up on recommendations.
- Contribute to special projects, including archiving and statistical preparation.
Risk Analysis:
- Conduct detailed analyses of suppliers' financial statements during tender processes.
- Calculate and compare financial ratios with industry standards and other suppliers.
- Advise procurement officers on risks and necessary documentation.
Compliance with Non-Resident Tax Regulations:
- Ensure timely payments and remittances.
- Oversee T4A-NR production and issuance.
- Approve withholding calculations performed by the Payables team.
- Act as the primary contact for government audits.
Lease and Contract Analysis:
- Analyze new contracts for completeness.
- Document the accounting treatment of contracts in accordance with IFRS 16.
- Assist in determining the company's implicit borrowing rate for IFRS 16 with external advisors.
Collaboration with Senior Accountant:
- Draft initial versions of notes for annual financial statements and calculate related financial data.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in business administration or finance.
- CPA designation or in progress.
- Familiarity with IFRS, Canadian corporate taxes, and commodity taxes.
- A minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in corporate accounting.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
