Position Overview
We are looking for a driven Upstream Scientist to become a vital member of our Manufacturing, Science & Technology team. This role will be instrumental in establishing and operationalizing a 200L scale pilot manufacturing facility aimed at producing materials for CMC development. Your contributions will ensure the provision of high-quality representative materials for regulatory submissions, facilitating GLP toxicology studies. You will also be pivotal in technology transfer and scaling processes to ensure efficient antibody production from laboratory to manufacturing levels.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate single-use bioreactors and mixers for the production of therapeutic antibodies, bispecifics, and related biologics at scales up to 200L.
- Collaborate closely with process development, manufacturing, and other Technical Operations teams to establish process parameters and best practices for 200L scale production.
- Draft SOPs, technical reports, batch records, and technology transfer documentation.
- Utilize a scientific approach to evaluate and test new technologies aimed at reducing production costs and optimizing process development.
- Support facility readiness and start-up activities, ensuring batch readiness and operational efficiency.
- Work in partnership with stakeholders to facilitate technology transfers and scale-up to GMP manufacturing.
- Promote and uphold high safety standards within the pilot plant environment.
- Analyze and interpret data to inform scientific decision-making.
Qualifications
- A minimum of 5 years of industrial experience in process development, manufacturing, and MSAT.
- A bachelor's degree in biotechnology, chemical/biochemical engineering, or a related life-science field.
- Hands-on experience in mammalian cell culture and bioreactor operations, including familiarity with single-use technologies.
- Expertise in cell culture metrics such as agitation, viable cell density, metabolite consumption rates, pH, dissolved oxygen, and media/feed composition.
- Experience in scale-up processes, technology transfer, batch documentation, data analysis, and management.
- Demonstrated experience in batch production.
- Proven ability as a cell culture and upstream processing scientist with practical experience in bioreactor operation and single-use technologies.
- Experience in mammalian cell culture, growth media preparation, and upstream operations to support robust processes for recombinant monoclonal and bispecific antibody expression at scales up to 200L.
- Able to thrive in a dynamic environment with shifting priorities, applying pragmatic, risk-based decision-making in process development and manufacturing.
What We Offer
AbCellera provides a competitive salary range of CAD $75,200 - $94,000 annually, commensurate with your qualifications and experience. In addition to base compensation, we offer equity, an annual performance-based bonus, and a 6% (non-match) RRSP contribution.
