Unit Overview
The WLMH is a comprehensive community hospital with a capacity of 50 beds, dedicated to delivering primary healthcare services to its patients. This facility serves as a training hub for primary care medicine in collaboration with McMaster University. The hospital offers a range of services including general medicine, surgical procedures, obstetrics, and is equipped with an intensive care unit and a fully operational emergency department. The role of the Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) encompasses both mentorship and direct clinical involvement with patients across various departments.
Role Overview
The RRT is accountable to the Clinical Manager of Programs and plays a vital role in the care and management of patients requiring both invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation. Key responsibilities include advanced neonatal resuscitation, newborn airway management, oxygen therapy, aerosol therapy, and arterial blood gas sampling. The RRT assists with pre- and post-tracheotomy care, collaborates with medical specialists, and provides comprehensive respiratory therapy assessments, discharge planning, and care strategies. Additionally, the RRT is an integral member of the Code Blue response team. Attendance at patient and program meetings is required, along with effective communication with relevant home care providers and clients. The Respiratory Therapist operates independently, exercising sound judgment and decision-making in daily operations. They serve as a resource within the cardio-respiratory department and adopt a multidisciplinary, collaborative approach focused on patient and family-centered care.
Work Schedule
Shifts may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
