Under the guidance of the Lab Demonstrator and the Department Chair, this role is essential for the preparation and execution of chemistry laboratory experiments across various college-level chemistry courses. The incumbent will also be responsible for the upkeep of laboratory supplies, equipment, and demonstration kits. Participation in the development of innovative laboratory exercises may be required on occasion.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and deliver chemistry laboratory experiments in alignment with course objectives.
- Maintain and organize laboratory supplies and equipment to ensure a safe and efficient working environment.
- Assist in the creation of new laboratory exercises to enhance student learning experiences.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
- A Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Chemistry is mandatory.
- A minimum of two years of experience in a chemistry laboratory setting, including the maintenance of supplies and equipment.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be evaluated.
- Familiarity with health and safety regulations, including WHMIS standards.
- Understanding of first and second-year chemistry concepts and laboratory techniques, including the operation of relevant equipment.
- Experience in providing instructional support within a chemistry laboratory context.
- Competence in using various computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, email, and the Internet.
Skills & Abilities:
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to instruct and demonstrate equipment usage to students.
- Capacity to build and maintain productive working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the public.
- Ability to interpret and apply departmental policies and technical documentation.
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
- Capability to supervise and lead others effectively.
- Ability to respond to and manage hazardous or emergency situations.
- Demonstrated initiative and responsibility in the workplace.
Working Conditions:
- Flexibility in working hours is essential, as evening courses are commonly offered.
