About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Social Worker/Counselor to join our team at BC Cancer. As a key member of our Patient and Family Counseling team, you will provide critical psychosocial support to cancer patients and their families, helping them navigate the complexities of cancer care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide Counseling and Support: Screen, assess, and counsel patients and families concerning emotional and practical needs associated with their diagnosis, helping them cope with the challenges of cancer.
  • Collaborate with Interdisciplinary Teams: Work closely with healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, and other specialists, to provide comprehensive care and support to patients and families.
  • Develop and Facilitate Group Programs: Design and lead group programs to meet the needs of patients and families, promoting education, support, and connection.
  • Consult with Other Disciplines: Provide consultation to other healthcare professionals, sharing expertise and best practices in psychosocial care.
  • Identify Patient Needs and Make Referrals: Assess patients' needs for services and make appropriate referrals, or develop alternate strategies for patient support, education, and follow-up care.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement: Contribute to the planning and development of our department's quality improvement program, ensuring that our services meet the highest standards of care.
  • Provide Clinical Guidance and Education: Offer clinical guidance to students and volunteers, promoting professional development and excellence in psychosocial care.
Requirements
  • Master's Degree in Social Work or Related Field: Possess a Master's degree in a social sciences discipline relevant to the job, such as Social Work, Counseling Psychology, or Clinical Psychology.
  • Experience in Interdisciplinary Settings: Have a minimum of two years of recent experience working in an interdisciplinary setting, with expertise in individual, couple, family, and group work, program and community development, adjustment and grief counseling in a healthcare or oncology setting.
  • Expertise in Brief Evidence-Based Therapy Models: Demonstrate aptitude and experience in brief evidence-based therapy models, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Systems Theory, Solution-Focused Therapy, Supportive Therapy, Crisis Counseling, Group Therapy, and Resource Counseling.
  • Eligibility for Registration: Be eligible for registration with a designated professional regulatory body.
