The Electrical Trades Development Supervisor is accountable for strategic workforce planning, training initiatives, and enhancing personnel management practices within the electrical trade sector. Reporting to the Director of Trades Workforce Development, this role plays a pivotal part in providing specialized insights and guidance to shipyard operations, primarily through coaching General Supervisors and Area Managers, while also recommending effective solutions and corrective action plans.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with planning teams to identify and develop precise workforce plans.
  • Offers trade-specific guidance and training for all personnel.
  • Assesses training and development requirements for General Supervisors and trades personnel.
  • Provides performance evaluations for General Supervisors, Chargehands, and Apprentices in conjunction with Area Managers.
  • Conducts thorough root cause analyses to address trade-related barriers affecting production efficiency and quality.
  • Analyzes performance metrics, gathers feedback from trades, and selects key processes for targeted development.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory standards and procedures related to inspections and quality assurance.
  • Stays informed on advancements in trade technology and methodologies, updating training materials as necessary.
  • Develops and implements processes for quality assurance, data management, and corrective action strategies.
  • Facilitates resolution of cross-departmental quality issues, ensuring effective communication and feedback.
  • Establishes policies for equipment protection in collaboration with relevant departments.
  • Leads investigations into workplace incidents and misconduct, ensuring adherence to company policies.
  • Supports General Supervisors in managing personnel issues, including disciplinary actions and absence management.
  • Works with Ability Management to identify suitable roles for employees requiring accommodations.
  • Participates in meetings related to grievances, union management, and collective bargaining as needed.
  • Exemplifies Seaspan's Core Values through leadership and conduct.
  • Undertakes additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Red Seal Certification in Electrical and qualifications for work performance and inspection. Multi-ticketed status is advantageous.
  • At least 6 years of relevant experience in an industrial maintenance setting, or a combination of advanced education and 4 years of related experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience in a unionized environment.
  • Comprehensive understanding of production processes specific to shipbuilding, including electrical, welding, and mechanical disciplines.
  • Strong written, verbal, and electronic communication skills.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills with a commitment to follow-up.
  • Ability to inspire and lead teams, manage change, and handle difficult conversations effectively.
  • Proven track record of building productive working relationships and guiding teams toward common objectives.
  • Strong conflict resolution and negotiation skills to address disagreements constructively.
  • Commitment to safety and quality, with experience in behavioral-based safety practices.
  • Appreciation for diversity and its value within a team environment.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and web-based applications.

The estimated salary for this role ranges from $99,000 to $121,000, determined by various factors including the candidate's experience and internal equity considerations.
