Position Overview:

Pewaseskwan, in collaboration with RareKids-CAN: Pediatric Rare Disease Clinical Trials (PRDCT) and Treatment Network, is seeking an Indigenous Community Navigator (ICN) to support the Equity, Diversity, Inclusivity, and Indigeneity (EDI+I) Sub-Platform.

Core Objective:

Individuals affected by Rare Diseases often encounter discrimination, with many facing lifelong disabilities without access to effective therapies. Some individuals experience additional barriers to participating in Clinical Trials (CTs) due to belonging to various equity-deserving groups that have historically faced societal discrimination, resulting in insufficient socioeconomic resources. The primary aim of this Sub-Platform is to identify and rectify inequities while developing strategies to promote diversity and inclusion.

The Indigenous Community Navigator will operate under the guidance of Drs. King and King to integrate Indigenous perspectives into PRDCT research. This includes incorporating essential elements of Indigenous data governance into CTs, fostering cultural awareness and safety among network participants, and facilitating Indigenous involvement in CTs. The ICN will play a crucial role in establishing and nurturing relationships with Indigenous communities, including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit in various settings, employing a distinctions-based approach. The ICN will conduct a comprehensive assessment of existing resources related to PRDCT within Indigenous communities, ensuring their voices are actively engaged in shaping project metrics and decision-making processes.

Key Responsibilities:

Spearhead the integration of Equity, Diversity, Inclusivity, and Indigeneity into RareKids-CAN.
Cultivate and maintain relationships with Indigenous communities, including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit across diverse environments.
Perform a thorough assessment of existing resources related to PRDCT within Indigenous communities. Develop recommendations on Indigenous data sovereignty for PRDCT by engaging with Indigenous Nations and national Indigenous educators. Collaborate and share knowledge and best practices with other platforms regarding Indigenous engagement. Design and deliver training across the Platforms on topics such as: Cultural Safety, Community Engagement, Anti-oppression, Anti-racism, and Health Determinants. Focus on enhancing research capacity throughout RareKids-CAN, including increasing representation of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit members across Canada. Coordinate and contextualize Indigenous approaches across Canada on PRDCT. Assemble, nurture, and support a national advisory circle of Indigenous Knowledge Holders with expertise in Indigenous health research across Canada. Collaborate with Pewaseskwan leads and the IKH circle to identify and utilize resources necessary for EDI+I resource development. Facilitate discussions on EDI+I resources to guide and support PRDCT in improving Indigenous health research and care in Canada. Engage with funding partners to develop plans addressing their specific needs in EDI+I.

Performance Standards:

In-depth knowledge of Indigenous health and wellness. Experience in health research and educational training. Exceptional communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with others. The successful applicant will become part of the Pewaseskwan team, participating in group activities including Learning Circles, gatherings, and team meetings. Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in practice. Strong verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills. Methodical approach to planning and project execution with a keen attention to detail. Proven problem-solving skills in managing multiple projects under tight deadlines.

Qualifications:

Education: A level of education equivalent to a Master's degree in a relevant health or business discipline from a recognized institution. A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Experience: A minimum of two years of directly related experience in a research environment. Familiarity with University of Saskatchewan policies and procedures will be considered an asset. Demonstrated leadership experience in research settings and among Indigenous communities.

Skills:

Experience in organizing professional or social events, both in-person and virtual (particularly in logistics, promotion, and communication). Proficiency with technology platforms, including Zoom and various third-party event software, as well as Microsoft programs. Knowledge of Indigenous Data Sovereignty. Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong analytical abilities. Proven capability to work effectively with decision-makers to find solutions to unique and complex challenges. Ability to navigate difficult situations with tact and diplomacy. Demonstrated ability to exercise judgment, tact, and confidentiality. Highly proficient computer skills. Proven leadership capabilities.

This position requires the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines, along with personal initiative and sound judgment. It is suited for an individual who is creative, innovative, adaptable, and committed to upholding standards of equity, transparency, consistency, and accuracy in establishing a vital Indigenous presence in this field.
