The School of Continuing Studies is seeking applications for the anticipated course offering:

CSGD-N147: Story and Narrative Development Studio for Games

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course delves into the critical role of storytelling in enhancing video gameplay. Through the analysis of both historical and modern games, students will assess various narrative styles to uncover themes and methodologies applicable to their own game concepts. The curriculum covers traditional narrative techniques, nonlinear storytelling, and innovative gaming narrative frameworks, alongside worldbuilding for interactive experiences. Students will have the opportunity to prototype their narratives within a game engine, examining the interplay between interactivity and storytelling. Discussions will also address representation, diversity, and inclusion within the gaming industry. Participants will develop characters, settings, and frameworks to produce a comprehensive game design document. Studio activities will be complemented by lectures and constructive critiques.

For online courses, students are responsible for acquiring their own software.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A post-secondary degree (Master's preferred) or equivalent professional experience.
  • Proven expertise in game design and narrative development.
  • Familiarity with art and design principles.
  • Experience in curriculum design and delivery for adult learners.
  • Experience in online course facilitation is an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Commitment to equity and diversity principles, fostering a respectful learning environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Preparation and delivery of course content; participation in instructor and program meetings.

COMPENSATION: $74.18 per hour, plus 6% in lieu of benefits and 4% in lieu of vacation.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: The contract is limited to the designated development and delivery periods and is contingent upon sufficient enrollment.
