As a Game Design Director, you will oversee a talented game design team in collaboration with Game Design Leadership. Your role will involve partnering with various departments to establish and maintain effective design processes, ensuring best practices for documentation, and enhancing the productivity and output of the design team. While your focus will be on management and process optimization, your creative insights will guide the team toward achieving high-quality results.

You will champion the discipline of Game Design, ensuring that the craft's interests are prioritized and that the team receives the necessary support and ownership to make a significant impact. Additionally, you will hold the team accountable for maintaining high standards of productivity and execution quality.

You will report directly to the Creative Director of the project.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and uphold best practices for design methodologies, processes, communication, documentation, and designer onboarding resources.
  • Manage and communicate the status of design objectives, documentation, and implementation across all project features to leadership and the team.
  • Collaborate with Game Design Directors, Production, and Development Directors to manage designer assignments, capacity planning, and productivity.
  • Facilitate communication and relationships with partner teams and other disciplines.
  • Oversee design communication channels, including status updates, team health reports, and interdisciplinary syncs.
  • Provide guidance and feedback to game design staff, assisting them in resolving complex process and personnel challenges.
  • Support the professional growth of game designers through development plans, mentorship, training, and identifying opportunities for advancement.
  • Promote a positive workplace culture that values diversity and inclusion in game design decisions and hiring practices.
  • Foster a creative culture within the team and studio in collaboration with Game Design Leadership.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in a game design role within the gaming industry, with at least 3 years in a leadership or director capacity.
  • Proficient in multiple stages of development, from pre-production to live updates.
  • Experience in change management and enhancing team operations.
  • Familiarity with JIRA and agile methodologies for task tracking.
  • Expertise in management, mentoring, and creating career development plans with a proven track record of fostering career growth.
  • Experience with proprietary game design tools and development environments.
  • Commitment to creating an engaging, inclusive, and enjoyable working environment.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience managing large teams.
  • Background in Production or Project Management roles.
  • Experience working on AAA HD or mobile cross-platform titles.
  • Familiarity with both Waterfall and Agile development methodologies.
  • Experience across various areas of game design (e.g., Level, Narrative, Systems).
  • Collaboration with research departments and product management to establish tests and interpret data for design improvement.
  • Design experience in games emphasizing open-ended player creativity and complex interconnected systems.
