As a Game Design Director, you will oversee a talented design team, collaborating closely with Game Design Leadership. Your role will involve shaping and maintaining the design process, implementing best practices for documentation, and ensuring the design team delivers exceptional creative quality. Your leadership will be pivotal in guiding the team towards achieving their goals while focusing on process and management.

You will champion the discipline of Game Design, ensuring that the team's needs are met and that they have the resources necessary to make a significant impact. You will also hold the team accountable for maintaining high standards of productivity and quality in execution.

Your reporting line will be to the Creative Director of the project.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain best practices for design methodologies, communication, documentation, and designer onboarding.
  • Manage and communicate the status of design objectives and documentation across all project features to leadership and the team.
  • Collaborate with Game Design Directors, Production, and Development Directors to manage designer assignments and productivity.
  • Facilitate communication and relationships with partner teams and other disciplines.
  • Oversee design communication channels, including status updates and team health reports.
  • Provide guidance and feedback to game design staff, assisting them in overcoming complex challenges.
  • Support the professional growth of game designers through development plans, mentorship, and training opportunities.
  • Promote a positive workplace culture that values diversity and inclusion in game design practices.
  • Foster a creative culture within the team and studio in collaboration with Game Design Leadership.

Qualifications:

  • Over 10 years of experience in game design within the gaming industry, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Proficient in various stages of development, from pre-production to live updates.
  • Experience in change management and enhancing team operations.
  • Familiarity with JIRA and agile methodologies for task management.
  • Strong management and mentoring skills, with a track record of developing careers.
  • Expertise in proprietary game design tools and development environments.
  • Ability to create an engaging and inclusive work environment.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience managing large teams.
  • Background in Production or Project Management.
  • Experience with AAA HD or mobile cross-platform titles.
  • Familiarity with both Waterfall and Agile methodologies.
  • Knowledge across multiple areas of game design, such as Level, Narrative, and Systems.
  • Experience collaborating with research departments to enhance design through data interpretation.
  • Design experience focused on open-ended player creativity and complex systems.
