Role Summary
The Clinical Extern operates as a vital member of the healthcare team, serving as an unregulated care provider within both inpatient and outpatient settings. Collaborating with an inter-professional healthcare team, the Clinical Extern is dedicated to delivering high-quality care to patients and their families, ensuring an exceptional patient and family experience. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse, and in conjunction with an Extern Mentor/Coordinator, the Clinical Extern enhances their skills through education, experience, and reflective practice. Responsibilities include assisting with daily living activities and nursing interventions as delegated by nursing staff. Completion of mandatory training for orientation is required.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care Responsibilities:
- Operates under the direct or indirect supervision of a nurse to ensure competency in performing all assigned duties;
- Engages in patient assessments as directed, including monitoring vital signs and conducting physical assessments;
- Assists patients with daily living activities such as feeding, bathing, grooming, and toileting;
- Facilitates patient mobility by providing assistance with lifting, turning, transferring, and ambulating;
- Ensures a safe and clean environment for patients, contributing to comfort measures;
- Participates in care planning and safety evaluations;
- Documents care provided and assessment findings accurately;
- Engages in additional skills as approved by supervising staff.
Professional Standards and Policies:
- Adheres to organizational policies and professional standards, considering guidance from the College of Nurses of Ontario for unregulated care providers.
Team Collaboration:
- Seeks assistance with assigned tasks when necessary.
- Promotes positive team dynamics and collaboration.
- Complies with safety practices and policies to ensure a secure environment for staff and patients.
- Supports a workplace culture that aligns with The Royal's Harassment-Free Workplace and Occupational Health and Safety policies.
Qualifications
- Completion of 2nd year and currently enrolled in the third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program.
- Completion of 1st year and currently enrolled in the second year of a Practical Nursing diploma (RPN).
- Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support is required.
- Maintains excellent academic standing.
- Experience in psychiatric or mental health nursing, particularly with individuals facing mental health challenges or addictions, is advantageous.
- Demonstrated knowledge of infection prevention and control practices is beneficial.
- Exhibits strong problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking abilities.
- Possesses effective organizational and time-management skills.
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work with clients from diverse cultural and social backgrounds is essential.
- Proficiency in English (level A-) is mandatory in oral expression, comprehension, reading, and writing; bilingualism (French/English) is an asset.
Compensation: $21.22 per hour
