Position Title: Vision Rehabilitation Assistant

Location: Calgary, AB

Reports To: Provincial Manager, Healthcare Operations

Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent

Compensation: $24.50/hour

Primary Responsibilities

This role encompasses a variety of tasks aimed at enhancing the delivery of Vision Loss Rehabilitation Services. The ideal candidate will be a highly skilled and organized health care professional who prioritizes safety, security, and patient wellness.

The key responsibilities include collaborating with our ACVREP certified Rehabilitation Specialists in Vision Rehabilitation, Orientation and Mobility, and Low Vision to implement established rehabilitation activities or programs.

Essential Duties

  • Under the guidance of Rehabilitation Specialists, manage referrals and assist in executing rehabilitation plans.
  • As part of a multidisciplinary team, contribute to the planning, execution, modification, and assessment of rehabilitative treatment strategies.
  • Facilitate opportunities for individuals with sight loss to practice adaptive skills for independent living, covering personal management, household management, basic indoor orientation and mobility skills, and the use of low vision aids.
  • Support the specialist in maintaining and inventorying adaptive devices and demonstrating consumer products.
  • Assist in monitoring and evaluating treatment and care plans, providing updates on observations and progress to the specialist.
  • Offer functional guidance to clients and their support networks to optimize the rehabilitation process.
  • Maintain comprehensive case data and documentation in accordance with VLRC Systems and Procedures.
  • Collaborate with the rehabilitation team in service delivery, coordinate travel schedules, and facilitate program development.

Relationships

  • Establish close working relationships with all members of the rehabilitation team.
  • Provide support and guidance to clients and their families regarding adjustments to vision loss.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Promote awareness of vision health issues through consultation, public education, and in-service training.

Problem Solving and Decision Making

  • Operate under established processes with general direction.
  • Deliver timely and innovative solutions while recommending process enhancements.
  • Effectively address unique individual needs with creative problem-solving.
  • Exhibit excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills:

Experience and Education:

  • Post-secondary education or prior experience in a Rehabilitation Assistant program, Occupational or Physical Therapy Assistant program, Kinesiology program, Social Work, or a related field is preferred.
  • Previous experience working with individuals who are blind or partially sighted is an asset.
  • A clean Criminal Record and Criminal Reference Check for vulnerable populations are required.

Work Environment:

  • Services will be provided in various settings, including VLRC centers, virtually, individual homes, and the community.
  • Flexibility in working hours is essential.
  • Travel may be necessary.
