Job Summary

Vancouver Community College is seeking a qualified Instructor of American Sign Language to join our team. As a key member of our faculty, you will be responsible for teaching students in an assigned field of study using a diverse set of instruction methods and tools.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and deliver curriculum, prepare teaching materials, and provide assessments of students' progress.
  • Teach students using a diverse and systematic plan of lectures, presentations, demonstrations, discussion groups, laboratory work, shop sessions, seminars, case studies, field assignments, and independent or group projects.
  • Prepare, administer, and mark papers, tests, exams, and other assessments to monitor and evaluate students' progress.
  • Assist and provide support to students and potential students by advising on program curricula and career decisions.
  • Maintain effective stewardship of classroom facilities, equipment, materials, software, and tools.
  • Participate in departmental and college meetings and events, and consult with other College departments as needed.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a relevant field.
  • Visual-gestural communication skills.
  • Ability to teach ASL to Deaf and hard of hearing adults.
  • Knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) curriculum and adaptation for Deaf and hard of hearing adults.
  • Provincial ASL Instructor Certificate (BC) or equivalent.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with staff and students.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in delivering instruction within the subject area to newcomers to Canada who may have no ASL or English.
  • ASLICE certification or American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) equivalent.
  • Knowledge of appropriate community resources.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the Deaf community.
  • Knowledge of deaf issues.
