About the Opportunity

We are seeking a skilled Health Care Social Worker to join our team at Nova Scotia Health Authority. As a key member of our Mental Health and Addictions team, you will play a vital role in facilitating access to mental health and addiction services for individuals across the province.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Facilitating intake for mental health and addiction services, utilizing appropriate screening tools and risk assessments to ensure timely and effective support.
  • Providing brief supportive counseling and psychoeducation to individuals, as well as consultation and information sharing with community resources and mental health teams.
  • Building working relationships with clients, families, and community partners to support navigation of the healthcare system and access to resources.
  • Identifying and addressing barriers to treatment and support, and providing referrals to ancillary services as needed.

We are looking for a candidate with a strong background in social work, mental health, and addiction services. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse populations and stakeholders.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work
  • Registration with Nova Scotia College of Social Workers
  • Three years of related experience in mental health and addiction services
  • Experience working with individuals with mental health and/or substance use concerns
  • High degree of motivational interviewing skills and engagement techniques
  • Experience utilizing screening and triaging tools
  • Knowledge of harm reduction strategies and stages of change theory
  • Demonstrated awareness of community resources and programs and community development methods
  • Demonstrated knowledge of recovery-oriented practice & patient and family-centered care
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, Mental Health First Aid an asset, or committing to complete these courses
  • Working knowledge of DSM
  • Ability to navigate and de-escalate situations and offer crisis support using appropriate methods when needed
  • Demonstrated knowledge of cultural sensitivity and cultural competency
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

  • Competitive hourly rate of $42.89
  • Full-time long assignment with 75 hours biweekly
