About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Water Quality Scientist/Engineer to join our team at WSP Canada. As a key member of our Water Quality assessment team, you will be responsible for providing technical expertise and support to our clients in the mining and natural resources sectors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, plan, and oversee field programs, including baseline and operations monitoring, aquatic effects monitoring, and construction monitoring.
  • Manage and analyze large datasets, interpret measured and modeled data, and provide quality control for data collection, management, and analysis.
  • Apply in-depth knowledge of water quality-related protocols, standards, guidelines, regulations, licensing, and permitting requirements.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor junior staff to develop their skill sets, including technical skills, project experience, and general consulting and decision-making skills.
  • Plan and author technical reports, memorandums, responses to information requests from regulators, and other technical and communication deliverables.
  • Prepare presentations for internal teams, clients, and regulators and may be asked to participate in meetings and present to clients.
  • Collaborate on project work with other technical teams across the company, including aquatic biologists, toxicologists, geochemists, hydrogeologists, and hydrologists to support applications for environmental permits, water licenses, and approvals from regulatory agencies.
  • Provide technical support to clients for regulatory liaison and engagement with Indigenous Groups, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Network within the water quality and other technical teams, develop project teams, and interact with clients.
Requirements
  • University or equivalent education in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources, or similar.
  • Knowledge of environmental assessment processes and permitting requirements.
  • 6-9 years of relevant experience in water quality.
  • A passion for working in a fast-paced, dynamic, multi-disciplinary team environment, with strong interpersonal skills and problem-solving abilities.
  • A strong focus on quality assurance/quality control and effectively oversee teams during data collection and reporting.
  • Effective mentorship and delegation skills for junior staff, ability to work independently with minimal direction, and a willingness to receive constructive feedback from team members.
  • Experience in designing and supervising water quality, sediment quality, and aquatic field programs.
  • An in-depth knowledge of Canadian and provincial water quality guidelines, and their derivation, with the ability to apply that knowledge to water quality and sediment assessments.
  • Great data evaluation skills, including statistical techniques, and a keen understanding of data quality requirements for large datasets.
  • Excellent report writing skills with the ability to integrate multi-disciplinary information to support permitting objectives.
  • A valid driver's license.
  • An approach that embraces diversity and inclusion with a strong sense of ethics in your day-to-day work and approach to environmental management.
  • A proven commitment to health and safety.
  • Working knowledge of tools for analyzing or visualizing data, such as R or Power BI, is considered an asset.
