Position Overview

As a vital member of the Environmental & Social Risk Measurement & Analytics division within Group Risk Management, you will contribute to the identification, assessment, monitoring, and mitigation of environmental and social (E&S) risks at RBC. Your role will involve spearheading the design and execution of significant climate and E&S risk initiatives, utilizing analytical capabilities bolstered by research, data analytics, and insights.

A key aspect of this position will be the evaluation of RBC's financed emissions across various asset classes within carbon-intensive industries, alongside establishing and tracking progress towards net-zero objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Director of E&S Model Development to enhance RBC's proficiency in measuring financed emissions, setting net-zero goals, and providing carbon accounting insights across the organization.
  • Develop analytical tools to facilitate timely and precise measurement and monitoring capabilities.
  • Create model documentation and assist in model governance processes.
  • Generate insightful reports and presentations to ensure effective communication with stakeholders.
  • Work with diverse internal stakeholders across various business lines and functions to disseminate E&S Risk data and insights, supporting risk management, business strategy, and ESG and climate disclosures.
  • Establish a centralized environmental & social risk data hub by leveraging both internal and external data to enhance climate risk measurement and monitoring capabilities.
  • Aid in the continuous improvement of controls and governance related to the execution of climate risk analytics processes while maintaining up-to-date documentation.

Essential Qualifications

  • A strong interest in Environmental and Social Risk, particularly climate change.
  • An advanced degree in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Econometrics, Finance, Statistics, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or Economics.
  • Experience working within an analytics team, especially in addressing complex and ambiguous challenges.
  • Proven experience applying statistical methods, algorithms, and machine learning models to analyze data and reveal trends, patterns, and insights.
  • Proficient coding skills, with advanced knowledge of programming and querying languages, including SQL and Python, or demonstrated ability in another data analytics language (e.g., C/C++, Scala, R, MATLAB, SAS).
  • Ability to distill data into actionable business insights and communicate these effectively to diverse audiences.
  • A proven track record of developing innovative solutions to complex problems with minimal guidance.
  • A commitment to quality and precision, with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with climate change science and experience in developing and utilizing climate and economic scenarios, models, projections, and data.
  • Knowledge of climate risk and/or target-setting guidelines issued by organizations such as PCAF, NZBA, TCFD, ISSB, and/or OSFI (B-15).
  • Understanding of internal RBC data systems.
  • Experience with or knowledge of carbon-intensive sectors, including agriculture, aluminum, cement, coal, commercial and residential real estate, iron and steel, oil and gas, power generation, and transportation.
  • Experience collaborating with a diverse range of stakeholders.
