Overview

The role of a Forensic Psychiatrist within BC Mental Health & Substance Use Services (BCMHSUS), a division of the Provincial Health Services Authority, involves dual reporting to the BCMHSUS Medical Director and the senior leadership team. Medical professionals collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to provide care across various services, including the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital, regional clinics, and the Forensic Assertive Community Treatment (FACT) program. These teams focus on assisting adults facing intricate mental health and substance use challenges who are entangled in the criminal justice system.

Within the Forensic Psychiatric Services framework, the emphasis is placed on expertise in managing and assessing mental health and substance dependence issues. A strong collaborative approach is essential for guiding patients through recovery, rehabilitation, and reintegration into the community. As part of the Forensic Psychiatric Services, team members deliver specialized forensic psychiatric and psychological evaluations and treatment services to the courts, the BC Review Board, and the custody and community sectors of BC Corrections.

Available Positions Include:

- Forensic Psychiatrist, Forensic Psychiatric Hospital/Regional Clinics

- Forensic Psychiatrist, Forensic Assertive Community Treatment Team (FACT)

- Forensic Psychiatrist, Community Transitional Care Program (CTC)

Key Responsibilities

Medical Expertise

  • Conduct thorough assessments, including evaluating the risk of re-offending, based on legal orders and the nature of the assessment requested; interpret results and formulate treatment recommendations in formal reports for judicial submission.
  • Engage in treatment planning discussions, employing a holistic care model for individual clients and an interdisciplinary approach.

Knowledge Sharing

  • Facilitate the ongoing education of the Forensic Psychiatry team by sharing extensive practical experience and knowledge in addressing complex clinical issues.
  • Opportunities for cross-appointments as faculty at the University of British Columbia are encouraged to enhance the understanding of mental health treatment within the forensic population across the province.

Leadership in Programs

  • Spearhead the planning and execution of care and treatment through innovative service delivery models developed by collaborative, cross-service professional teams, including the new Forensic Assertive Community Treatment team (FACT).
  • Contribute to system-wide improvements through various initiatives, including research, academic teaching, and health promotion.

Qualifications

Interested Candidates

Candidates should possess fellowship standing in the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada in Psychiatry, along with a certification in Forensic Psychiatry subspecialty, and a keen interest in academic forensic psychiatry or an accepted equivalent. Eligibility for licensing with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of British Columbia is required.
