POSITION OVERVIEW:
The role of the Speech and Language Intervention Specialist is primarily focused on executing the treatment and intervention strategies established by a speech-language pathologist or audiologist. This includes a strong emphasis on prevention, assessment, rehabilitation, and reeducation for students who are experiencing or are at risk of encountering issues related to hearing, language, speech, or voice.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Speech and Language Intervention Specialist plays a vital role in the delivery of speech therapy or audiology services, adhering to both educational and administrative guidelines at the school and district levels.
Engage in the planning, execution, or oversight of initiatives aimed at preventing communication challenges or identifying existing communication barriers, in collaboration with various stakeholders.
Work alongside a multidisciplinary team to create and update individualized student intervention plans, incorporating, when necessary, the speech therapy or audiology treatment strategies; participate in the selection of intervention goals and methodologies; collaborate with team members to coordinate interventions and assess the achievement of objectives.
Provide targeted interventions for a class or group of students facing similar challenges or for individuals with specific needs to enhance their learning and social integration.
Offer guidance and support to educators, clarifying the nature of students' communication challenges to facilitate adaptations in teaching methods and educational resources; inform them about the impact of these challenges on student learning and social integration; assist in the development and modification of existing educational materials; contribute to the selection of tools that support oral communication.
Empower and equip families and other educational stakeholders; deliver pertinent advice to foster attitudes and skills that enhance student communication; plan, organize, and facilitate training, informational sessions, and awareness initiatives regarding communication challenges.
Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with partner organizations; engage with relevant stakeholders to exchange advice and information; guide students or their families to suitable resources based on their specific situations and needs.
Provide recommendations to management, prepare reports on the evolution of situations, and make informed suggestions to aid in decision-making.
Ensure the maintenance and updating of records in accordance with the guidelines set by the school board; document progress notes or reports at various stages, including at the conclusion of processes and follow-up reports on interventions.
