Job Title: Battery Prototyping and Testing Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled Battery Prototyping and Testing Engineer to join our team at the University of Waterloo. As a key member of our research group, you will be responsible for providing battery prototyping and testing services to support research in the battery prototyping labs of the Ontario Battery and Electrochemistry Research Centre (OBEC).

Responsibilities:
  • Formulate slurries of active material, conductive additives, and binders for tape casting or slot-die coating onto current collectors.
  • Operate semi-automated machinery to create large format batteries of pouch and cylindrical geometry.
  • Measure key coating parameters using standard metrology equipment.
  • Train users in battery prototyping and testing procedures.
  • Maintain equipment, keep the prototyping space clean and organized, and dispose of hazardous materials.
  • Operate a variety of battery testers to determine performance of coin, pouch, and cylindrical cell prototypes.
  • Generate results files for external users and train internal and external users on battery tester operation.
  • Maintain and calibrate battery cycler and potentiostat/galvanostat channels.
Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Practical experience formulating active material slurries, processing electrodes, and operating battery testers or potentiostat/galvanostats.
  • Working knowledge of electrochemistry as applied to Li-ion or beyond Li-ion batteries.
  • Experience troubleshooting and working with scientific equipment.
  • Understanding of materials chemistry and electrochemical limitations of cathode and anode materials used in Li-ion batteries.
