Position Title: Victim Services Volunteer

Overview: Halifax Regional Police is a prominent police organization dedicated to community engagement and collaboration with Halifax Regional Municipality to enhance safety and security in our neighborhoods. As one of the largest police forces in Atlantic Canada, we are seeking individuals who are passionate about volunteering and committed to making a positive impact in our community.

Role of Victim Services Volunteers: Volunteers in this role provide essential emotional support, crisis intervention, and referral information to individuals affected by crime during evening hours. This includes assisting victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, robberies, assaults, and motor vehicle incidents.

Responsibilities:

  • Commit to 1-2 shifts per month on weekends from 6:00 p.m. to midnight.
  • Participate in meetings and training sessions.
  • Familiarize yourself with community resources and provide appropriate referrals.
  • Collaborate with a partner to support individuals in crisis situations.
  • Document interactions and relay information to Victim Services staff.

Location: Based in Dartmouth, with travel throughout the metro Halifax area.

Qualifications:

  • Must be 19 years of age or older.
  • Experience in providing listening support in a human services context.
  • Possession of a valid Nova Scotia Driver's Licence.
  • Reliable transportation is essential due to late-night shifts and limited public transport options.
  • Good driving record is required.
  • Proficient in computer use.
  • Able to attend training, meetings, and community events.
  • Must be willing to commit for a minimum of one year.

All candidates for the Victim Services Volunteer position must successfully complete the security clearance process as mandated by Halifax Regional Police.
