Role Overview:
The Chief Estimator will report directly to the Ontario Pre-Construction Director and will be expected to possess comprehensive knowledge in conceptual estimating, budgeting, tendering, proposal submissions, and construction methodologies. This role includes overseeing the estimating teams for buildings, large projects, and transit, while receiving mentorship from the Director to enhance leadership capabilities and strategic pursuits.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee bidding and pre-construction estimating, ensuring financial accountability in collaboration with the Director.
- Conduct thorough project scope reviews to guarantee the completeness of estimates, ensuring all technical specifications, subcontractor scopes, and general conditions are accurately quantified and priced.
- Identify and establish constructability requirements for high-level budgeting and orders of magnitude.
- Recommend and approve strategies for project risk and cost mitigation, alongside identifying potential project opportunities and savings.
- Formulate and endorse bid strategies, constructability requirements, and innovative approaches to enhance bidding success.
- Prepare and coordinate estimates as necessary.
- Compile and monitor analytics related to project estimating efforts.
- Manage, train, and mentor other estimators, ensuring the profit/loss performance of estimated projects is maintained.
- Provide leadership, coaching, and mentoring in planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, and training estimating personnel.
- Encourage the development of coaching and mentoring skills within the estimating team.
- Review all estimates meticulously, including a detailed assessment of others' work.
- Foster effective relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal stakeholders that reflect and support Graham's core values and brand image.
Qualifications:
- A completed University (Bachelor) program, demonstrating advanced understanding of complex concepts and procedures, often recognized by a degree (e.g., BA/BSc); additional certifications such as Gold Seal, LEED Accreditation, LEAN experience, MRICS, and CIQS are advantageous.
- A minimum of 20 years of combined field and estimating experience, with at least 5 years in a senior estimating role (Estimating Manager) at a medium-to-large General Contractor.
- Leadership experience in ICI-related projects.
- Proven track record in managing $100+ million projects and mentoring an estimating team.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and cultivate a high-performing team.
- Comprehensive understanding and proficiency in design-build, IPD, and Construction Management is beneficial.
