Peer Support Specialist (PSS) - Role Overview

Under the supervision of the Clinical Operations Manager, the Peer Support Specialist (PSS) plays a vital role in assisting individuals in supervised consumption settings as part of a harm reduction strategy. The PSS utilizes their personal insights and lived experiences related to mental health and substance use to help diminish obstacles to care and enhance client engagement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Foster peer-specific relationships with clients to ensure ongoing engagement
  • Oversee client consumption of substances in a safe environment
  • Support nurse-led interventions during overdose situations
  • Aid clients in navigating health and social service systems
  • Accompany clients to various appointments and assist in scheduling follow-ups
  • Engage in community events that align with client objectives and promote community involvement
  • Educate clients about their rights and the grievance process
  • Provide both individual and group support focused on empowerment, education, and life skills development
  • Assist clients in integrating into the community and provide escort services to appointments
  • Facilitate connections between clients and service providers
  • Deliver ongoing training to team members regarding the experiences of individuals from marginalized communities
  • Collaborate with clients to identify their goals and formulate care plans
  • Help de-escalate challenging situations and coordinate with external resources when necessary
  • Utilize electronic charting systems to maintain and update client records
  • Educate clients on clinic protocols to enhance their access to care
  • Participate actively in the Client Engagement Committee
  • Contribute to research initiatives and quality improvement efforts
  • Perform additional related duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training, and Experience

  • Diploma in community social services or a related field
  • Minimum of two years of relevant experience, including service planning
  • Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Current certification in First Aid and CPR
  • A Class 5 Driver's License is preferred

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Understanding of primary health care and interprofessional collaboration
  • Familiarity with community integration and recovery principles
  • Basic knowledge of various diagnoses, treatment options, and support resources
  • Capacity to serve as a role model and share relatable experiences
  • Proficiency in managing crisis situations and resolving conflicts effectively
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Skill in prioritizing tasks and problem-solving
  • Competence in operating office equipment, including computers
