Position Overview: Traveling Mental Health Counselor Level 2

The Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority is seeking a dedicated Traveling Mental Health Counselor Level 2 to join our mental health services team. This role is pivotal in providing essential mental health support to First Nation children, youth, adults, and families across 33 remote northern communities.

The successful candidate will engage in extensive travel to various First Nations communities, delivering counseling services that encompass support, intervention, crisis management, and group therapy. Collaboration with local resources is key, as is the ability to build community capacity. When not traveling, the counselor may also provide services at the outpatient mental health facility based in Sioux Lookout.

Qualifications:
  • Preference will be given to individuals of First Nations ancestry (OHRC, Part II, Special Employment)
  • A minimum of a high school diploma and completion of a recognized mental health diploma program
  • Registration with a professional body is required or must be obtained within one year of employment
  • At least one year of relevant experience in mental health counseling
  • Familiarity with various therapeutic approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy and family systems therapy
  • Ability to adopt a holistic approach that emphasizes client strengths
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective rapport building with clients and stakeholders
  • Training in risk assessment, trauma-informed care, and substance abuse is advantageous
  • Experience working with diverse age groups, including children and families
  • Knowledge of mandatory reporting obligations
  • Proficient in client assessment and intervention strategies
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently
  • Understanding of First Nations culture and mental health priorities in the Sioux Lookout region
  • Ability to communicate in one or more First Nations dialects is an asset
Key Responsibilities:
  • Travel extensively to provide mental health counseling and support services
  • Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments and develop tailored treatment plans
  • Manage risk factors and create safety plans for clients
  • Facilitate therapeutic processes to enhance clients' coping skills
  • Regularly evaluate client progress and adjust treatment strategies as needed
  • Coordinate care with community resources and specialists
  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records
  • Lead group therapy sessions and conduct mental wellness workshops
  • Participate in supervision meetings for case reviews and professional development
  • Plan community visits to ensure timely service delivery
  • Engage in ongoing education related to mental health issues
  • Foster collaborative relationships with community mental health workers
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor
