Under the supervision of the unit manager, the oncology clinical nurse specialist serves as a vital and accessible resource for patients diagnosed with cancer and their families throughout their healthcare journey. This role involves collaboration within a multidisciplinary team, acting as a key resource to address the needs of patients, facilitating communication among all parties involved, and coordinating essential services to assist clients in managing their illness while ensuring a high quality of life. The clinical nurse specialist also provides emotional support, shares information, and works alongside other healthcare professionals to promote patient well-being.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Gathers and evaluates data to determine the physical and emotional health requirements of each patient and their family;
  • Assesses and responds to the physical and emotional needs of cancer patients and their families;
  • Plans and oversees the delivery of necessary care within her professional scope;
  • Collaborates closely with the multidisciplinary team to set short, medium, and long-term objectives, develop care plans, and track patient progress;
  • Works with colleagues to enhance service delivery;
  • Coordinates access to specialized medical services and diagnostic evaluations;
  • Maintains accurate patient records and shares pertinent information with the healthcare team;
  • Identifies care-related challenges and collaborates on improving care programs;
  • Enhances patient care practices by considering the individual needs and circumstances of clients.

Interdisciplinary Teamwork

  • Facilitates effective communication among team members to provide personalized patient care;
  • Organizes regular interdisciplinary meetings to encourage constructive dialogue.

Continuity of Care

  • Ensures the seamless transfer of information across various care settings;
  • Acts as a knowledgeable resource both internally and externally;
  • Fosters strong relationships with other clinical nurse specialists;
  • Facilitates transitions between regional and local healthcare teams.

Patient Education

  • Informs patients and families about their health conditions, treatment options, and necessary lifestyle changes;
  • Guides patients on available resources and support systems;
  • Prepares patients for medical tests and treatments;
  • Assesses educational needs and adapts teaching strategies accordingly.

Collaboration and Support

  • Assists patients and families in coping with their diagnosis;
  • Empowers patients to make informed decisions regarding their treatment;
  • Encourages open communication among all stakeholders;
  • Engages with families to develop solutions and adapt to their circumstances;
  • Participates in unit activities, ongoing education, and quality improvement efforts;
  • Supports colleagues and contributes to a positive work environment.
