Job Summary

The Director of Quality and Environmental Management is a key role that oversees the implementation of quality management processes to ensure customer satisfaction and compliance with Health, Safety, and Environmental regulations. This position is responsible for guiding the organization's strategy and ensuring that all stakeholders' well-being is ensured.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Collaborate with engineering, quality, and supply chain personnel to qualify suppliers and individual parts.
  2. Develop and maintain the Approved Supplier List (ASL) and conduct annual quality/capacity audits with key suppliers.
  3. Coordinate with supply chain to ensure proper containment, return/rework, and corrective actions for quarantine parts.
  4. Establish and maintain a documented quality management system based on ISO criteria.
  5. Manage the Client (Non-Conforming Report) system and hold personnel accountable for corrective actions and closing NCRs.
  6. Oversee incoming material and outgoing finished goods for quality control/quality assurance.
  7. Act as a customer advocate and work with them to address quality concerns related to shipped products.
  8. Collaborate with internal project management and external customers to coordinate activities in PD, PE, supply chain, manufacturing, and operations, ensuring compliance with the Quality Management System (QMS).
  9. Drive the ISO certification process.
  10. Perform internal audits on business processes at least annually, as per ISO 9001 specifications.
  11. Host an annual management meeting with the Leadership team, as per ISO 9001 specifications.
  12. Schedule and host external ISO 9001 audits, as needed.
  13. Oversee and validate the training of the organization in quality management system processes and update them on any changes.
  14. Develop and track monthly quality and HSE metrics/KPIs for the organization.
  15. Perform regular cadenced HSE audits.
  16. Provide initial onboarding QHSE training for new employees.
  17. Recommend PPE (personal protective equipment) for manufacturing floor personnel and work with supply chain to source it.
  18. Coach, mentor, and develop quality managers, quality engineers, and HSE personnel.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Minimum 10 years of experience as a quality manager supporting a manufacturing/service operation.
  2. Minimum of 10 years of supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment.
  3. Experience leading HSE policies, procedures, and enforcement in a manufacturing environment.
  4. Exposure to Canadian Health, Safety, and Environmental regulations.
  5. Previous experience working within an ISO certified manufacturing shop.
  6. Experience defining and documenting quality management procedures.
  7. QMS audit experience.
  8. Shop floor manufacturing operations experience.
  9. Experience implementing Lean manufacturing principles (and/or six sigma) in a manufacturing environment.
  10. Previous experience using an ERP system and/or an IT system for quality.
  11. Strong knowledge of quality assurance policies, processes, and procedures.
  12. Experience in project management and customer interface from a quality and HSE aspect.
  13. Proven ability to lead, motivate, and build teams.
  14. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  15. Ability to read and interpret technical documents.
  16. Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to efficiently evaluate, prioritize, and handle multiple and changing projects.

Education

  1. BS in quality systems, engineering, operations management, or equivalent.
  2. Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma problem-solving training.
  3. MBA is preferred.
  4. Certified quality inspector, engineer, or manager preferred.
