Main Purpose and Function

This role oversees the supervision, scheduling, and training of approximately 20 employees at the Gift Shop and Admissions Desk at VanDusen Botanical Garden. The position is responsible for purchasing merchandise, stocking the Gift Shop, and performing time entry for payroll. The Head Cashier/Gift Shop reports to the Supervisor of Revenue & Visitor Services and works closely with the Special Events Coordinators, Facility Booking Clerks, Marketing Coordinator, and Vancouver Botanical Gardens Association staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee scheduling, staffing, operations, and cash maintenance for daily operations at the Admissions Desk and front of house at special events.
  • Process purchase orders and invoices, receive merchandise, resolve discrepancies with suppliers, and maintain accurate records of saleable merchandise.
  • Review, record, and balance fiscal remittances, and order supplies required at the Admissions Desk.
  • Manage registers, Moneris devices, and large cash floats for special events, and provide entry for groups and memberships.
  • Act as the main point of contact for ActiveNet staff, and tend to issues and discrepancies related to cash security.
  • Provide information to patrons and the general public, and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Completion of Grade Twelve supplemented by considerable retail and cashiering experience, including supervisory responsibility, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge and understanding of customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of cashiering methods and practices, shop buying, shipping, invoicing, and inventory control procedures.
  • Working knowledge of standard office methods and procedures concerning the receiving and recording of remittances.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and suppliers.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, deal courteously with the public, and operate cash registers and adding machines.
