The Senior Medical Executive for Cowichan Valley operates within a co-management framework alongside an Executive Director, sharing the responsibility for the overall leadership and strategic direction of the clinical programs and portfolio.
Key ResponsibilitiesAccountability:
The Senior Medical Executive will oversee Medical Directors and Department Heads within the clinical programs, ensuring effective service delivery aligned with organizational goals.
Service Delivery Expectations:
- Ensure services are in line with the objectives of Island Health.
- Facilitate integration across various geographical areas and programs.
- Deliver services efficiently while supporting the medical staff organization and the service plan as outlined by Island Health.
The Senior Medical Executive will set formal annual performance expectations in collaboration with the Executive Vice-President and Chief Medical Officer to achieve the outlined deliverables.
Leadership and ManagementThe role involves directing multidisciplinary management teams to effectively lead personnel and adapt systems during periods of change, fostering a collaborative working environment and leading through influence and respect.
The Senior Medical Executive will ensure the establishment of appropriate standards of care and service, promoting quality improvement initiatives and patient safety activities within the assigned geographic area and selected clinical programs.
Collaborative ManagementIn partnership with Executive Directors, the Senior Medical Executive will:
- Ensure strategic and operational planning within clinical programs that maintains a patient-focused approach and anticipates shifts in services and changes in the healthcare system.
- Regularly monitor and review strategic and operational plans, ensuring alignment with the overall strategic objectives.
- Create an environment that encourages creativity and promotes solution-driven approaches to clinical care challenges.
- Facilitate the integration and coordination of operational patient care strategies among clinical program team members.
- Promote compliance with accreditation standards and ethical and legal requirements within clinical programs.
Medical Staff Organization Functions:
Collaborate with the medical staff organization and the Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee on the development and promotion of medical standards, education, and research.
Support continuing medical education activities, ensuring they align with professional development priorities and best practices.
Assist in the development and implementation of physician manpower plans, working collaboratively with the Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee.
Educational and Academic DevelopmentSupport the Island Medical Program and partner with representatives from educational institutions to promote research and educational initiatives.
Engage with research agencies to facilitate best practice service delivery.
