Reporting to the Manager of Community Social Development, the **Senior Community Planner (Seniors)** is tasked with leading strategies, policies, and initiatives that pertain to the City's efforts in supporting seniors (aged 55+) and fostering an age-resilient community. This role demands leadership, subject matter expertise, and functional guidance in executing the actions defined in the City of Richmond's Seniors Strategy and Dementia-Friendly Community Action Plan.

As the ideal candidate, you will take charge of formulating and executing policies and initiatives related to seniors; cultivating and sustaining collaborative relationships with community organizations; and researching, applying for, and overseeing government grants aimed at seniors. You will lead and supervise ongoing and project-based initiatives, ensuring that quality and service standards are upheld. This role empowers you to demonstrate your initiative and creativity in shaping impactful programs and projects.

Key Responsibilities:

This position is responsible for the oversight and execution of the City of Richmond's Seniors Strategy and Dementia-Friendly Community Action Plan, collaborating with staff from various City departments, Community Associations, and organizations serving seniors in Richmond. In this capacity, you will:

  • Provide specialized information and recommendations to City Council, senior management, and other departments regarding seniors-related policies and planning initiatives, including the preparation of reports and presentations.
  • Enhance community capacity in partnership with other agencies to promote seniors initiatives in Richmond.
  • Represent the City's interests in seniors-related matters on various internal and external committees and planning tables.
  • Engage in cross-departmental working groups, applying a seniors planning perspective to the development and implementation of City-wide strategies and policies.
  • Act as a primary contact for seniors and positive aging, maintaining ongoing community engagement.
  • Oversee the activities of support staff, contractors, and volunteers on research, projects, and community engagement related to seniors.
  • Research, apply for, and manage government grants focused on seniors.
  • Prepare and manage budgets for grants and seniors planning initiatives.
  • Perform additional related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Comprehensive understanding of community development and age-friendly planning principles.
  • In-depth knowledge of the demographics and needs of seniors in Richmond and the social service networks available.
  • Ability to identify and address social inequities and systemic barriers affecting positive aging.
  • Strong report preparation and recommendation skills.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with a focus on courtesy and discretion.
  • Ability to foster positive working relationships with staff, elected officials, and community members.
  • Capability to conduct extensive research and analysis on seniors-related policies.
  • Ability to successfully complete a Police Information Check.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's Licence for British Columbia.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in government, policy development, health services, or related fields focused on social issues and project management related to seniors.
  • A Master's Degree in Gerontology, Social Planning, Community Development, Sociology, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with other business software systems.

Position Status: Regular Full-Time
Salary Range: $66.08/hr
Hours of Work: Monday - Friday 8:15am - 5:00pm, compressed work week.
