Reporting to the Manager of Community Social Development, the Senior Community Planner (Seniors) will spearhead strategies, policies, and initiatives that focus on enhancing the quality of life for Richmond's senior population (aged 55 and above) and fostering an age-friendly community. This role entails providing leadership, expertise, and functional guidance in executing the actions outlined in the City of Richmond's Seniors Strategy and Dementia-Friendly Community Action Plan, collaborating with City staff, Community Associations, and various organizations serving seniors.

As the ideal candidate, you will take charge of formulating and executing policies and initiatives aimed at seniors; cultivating and sustaining collaborative relationships with community organizations; and researching, applying for, and overseeing government grants pertinent to seniors. You will lead ongoing and project-based efforts, ensuring that quality and service standards are upheld while empowering you to creatively shape impactful programs and initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

This role encompasses the oversight and execution of the City of Richmond's Seniors Strategy and Dementia-Friendly Community Action Plan, collaborating with staff from various City departments, Community Associations, and organizations dedicated to serving seniors. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing specialized information and recommendations to City Council and senior management regarding seniors-related policies and planning initiatives, including the preparation of reports and presentations.
  • Enhancing community capacity in partnership with other agencies to promote seniors initiatives in Richmond.
  • Representing the City's interests in seniors-related matters on various committees and joint planning tables.
  • Participating in cross-departmental working groups to integrate a seniors planning perspective into City-wide strategies and projects.
  • Acting as a primary contact for seniors and positive aging, engaging with the community on an ongoing basis.
  • Overseeing the work of support staff, contractors, and volunteers on research, projects, and community engagement related to seniors.
  • Researching, applying for, and managing government grants focused on seniors.
  • Preparing and managing budgets for grants and seniors planning initiatives.
  • Performing related duties as necessary.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • In-depth understanding of community development and age-friendly planning principles.
  • Extensive knowledge of the demographics and needs of seniors in Richmond and the available social service networks.
  • Ability to identify and address social inequities and systemic barriers affecting positive aging.
  • Strong report writing and recommendation formulation skills.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with professionalism and discretion.
  • Ability to maintain constructive relationships with various stakeholders, including government agencies and community organizations.
  • Capability to conduct comprehensive research and analysis on seniors-related policies.
  • Ability to successfully pass a Police Information Check.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's Licence for British Columbia.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in government, policy development, health services, or related fields focused on social issues, project management, and strategic planning for seniors.
  • A Master's Degree in Gerontology, Social Planning, Community Development, Sociology, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with other business software systems.

Salary Range: $66.08/hr
Hours of Work: Monday - Friday 8:15am - 5:00pm, compressed work week.
