Overview of the Position

In this pivotal role, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will report directly to the Board of Directors and will be tasked with the comprehensive leadership and administration of ICCE, aligning with the strategic vision established by the Board. The CEO will oversee all operational aspects, ensuring compliance with legislative standards, managing budgets, capital resources, and the overall programmatic offerings of ICCE. Collaborating closely with the Board and staff, the CEO will design, execute, and evaluate policies, initiatives, strategic endeavors, and research to advance the mission of ICCE.

The successful candidate will engage with and harness resources from academic institutions, industry stakeholders, and various organizations, while also fostering partnerships with Indigenous communities. A holistic approach will be adopted to manage the Centre's operations, ensuring that the priorities of Indigenous communities are integral to its activities. Additionally, the CEO will play a crucial role in enhancing the scientific, technical, and managerial capabilities of communities for effective cumulative effects management, positioning the Centre as a vital resource for Indigenous communities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Formulate and execute strategies to enhance ICCE's visibility and engagement with Indigenous communities across Canada.
  • Cultivate and sustain trust-based relationships with Indigenous communities and various stakeholders.
  • Identify and secure funding opportunities to ensure the ongoing success of ICCE.
  • Oversee the daily operations of the Centre.
  • Manage all personnel matters, including hiring, performance evaluations, and compensation in accordance with established policies and budgets.
  • Assess resource needs and lead recruitment efforts as necessary.
  • Collaborate with Indigenous communities to identify and recruit members for the ICCE Board.
  • Provide strategic leadership in the development of the organization's Strategic Plan and corresponding Annual Operating Plan and budgets.
  • Offer policy recommendations for Board consideration.
  • Work in partnership with the Board to create policies and plans that align with the organization's mission and member expectations.
  • Provide timely information and insights to support Board decision-making processes.
  • Identify and pursue relevant revenue sources and government grants.

Working Environment:

This role involves engagement with both public and Indigenous communities, including Chief and Council, administrative personnel, and members. The position requires adaptability to work effectively in a dynamic office setting, with some travel expected. Flexibility in working hours and locations is essential, with appropriate professional attire expected when representing ICCE.

Relationships:

Board of Directors
  • Responsible for approving and recommending ICCE's annual budget and financial resources.
  • Directly supervises all ICCE staff, overseeing recruitment, training, and performance management.
ICCE Members, Committees, Consultants, and Contractors
  • Maintains professionalism and ethical conduct while representing ICCE and adhering to its policies.
Strategic Program Partner Organizations
  • Engages in regular external communications to represent ICCE and negotiate contracts and services.
Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess significant experience and understanding of the unique rights and circumstances of First Nations, the Métis Nation, and/or Inuit in Canada.
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of proven experience in an executive leadership role or senior management position, preferably in a not-for-profit or resource management context.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing partnerships and leading initiatives with Indigenous organizations and communities.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a Board of Directors, providing proactive updates.
  • Proficient in developing and managing operational strategies and tracking progress towards objectives.
  • Knowledge of environmental, socioeconomic, and cultural monitoring practices, including cumulative effects monitoring.
  • Familiarity with Indigenous law related to resource development and environmental management.
  • Understanding of relevant provincial, territorial, and federal environmental assessment laws and land use planning frameworks.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous Knowledge and its application in environmental and resource management.
  • Proficient in both of Canada's official languages.
