The Nurse Practitioner plays a pivotal role in the continuous enhancement of quality and safety across all dimensions of care.

The Nurse Practitioner is entrusted with the thorough evaluation of patients, encompassing the diagnosis of various diseases, disorders, and conditions.

This role involves initiating treatment plans, managing healthcare, providing therapeutic interventions, and prescribing medications in accordance with established statutory and regulatory standards, as well as organizational policies and procedures.

Nurse Practitioners offer professional guidance to fellow healthcare providers and actively engage as autonomous members of interdisciplinary health teams, making referrals to specialists when necessary.

Collaboration with clients and other healthcare professionals is essential to identify and analyze trends that impact individuals, families, and communities. Nurse Practitioners develop and implement evidence-based strategies aimed at enhancing health outcomes and participate in policy-making efforts that shape health services and practices.

As committed professionals, they engage in peer and self-assessment to evaluate the effectiveness of their services at the individual, community, and population levels. They are responsible for their ongoing professional development and for maintaining their competence and registration as Nurse Practitioners.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Diagnoses and manages previously unidentified clients with undifferentiated diseases, illnesses, and conditions within the Nurse Practitioner’s scope of practice; orders necessary diagnostic tests; interprets investigation results and analyzes data to monitor progress and adjust treatment plans. Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to formulate and execute treatment strategies. Conducts patient rounds as appropriate and oversees ongoing care; provides immediate care in emergency situations.
  • Establishes management priorities for health conditions; offers follow-up care; communicates health findings, diagnoses, and prognoses to clients and their families; supports and guides clients in their responses to various health challenges.
  • Collaborates and consults with physicians and other healthcare and social service professionals as needed to assess and diagnose client conditions. Accepts referrals from and makes referrals to other healthcare professionals.
  • Prescribes medications in compliance with statutory and regulatory standards for Nurse Practitioners and within applicable organizational policies. Utilizes knowledge of pharmacology and evidence-based practices in selecting, prescribing, administering, and monitoring medications for treating diseases, disorders, or injuries.
  • Engages in research initiatives that contribute to improved patient care and advancements in nursing, health policy, and population health. Synthesizes qualitative and quantitative data regarding health determinants; maintains a focus on population health by implementing evidence-based screening and health promotion for at-risk populations and applying harm reduction strategies.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary education and professional development through case presentations, mentoring, and facilitating knowledge exchange in various settings; fosters effective healthcare partnerships.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates policies and procedures related to nursing and interdisciplinary practice, addressing legal and ethical issues that may arise in patient care.
  • Oversees the work of other nursing and healthcare personnel; may involve hiring staff, providing supervision, and evaluating performance as necessary.
  • Performs additional duties as required.

Qualifications:
Current registration as a Nurse Practitioner with the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP).

Eligibility to complete the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) through the BCCNP is required.

A minimum of four (4) years of recent, relevant clinical nursing experience.
Ability to perform the full range of Nurse Practitioner duties and responsibilities.

Capable of defining and articulating specific areas of practice and client populations for which the NP is qualified to provide healthcare services.

Demonstrated ability to self-direct, interact, and adapt effectively with other professionals in complex and dynamic environments. Strong communication and collaboration skills with patients and families regarding health findings, diagnoses, treatment options, self-care, and prognoses.

Proven ability to build relationships with nurses and other healthcare professionals using diverse communication strategies.

Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to lead and work within a team. Demonstrated capacity to transfer knowledge, teach, coach, and mentor others; ability to implement and evaluate planned changes.

Able to critically assess and evaluate health research literature to identify best practices; capable of integrating education and evidence-based research into practice.

Skilled in assessing and recognizing population health trends; able to devise and implement strategies for population-based prevention and health promotion.

Competent in supervising others and evaluating the care they provide as necessary.
