The Senior Administrative Leader plays a pivotal role in guiding the department towards achieving its strategic objectives. As the foremost staff member, this position encompasses comprehensive oversight of business operations, human resource management, financial stewardship, and the administration of facilities, including technological resources. The Senior Administrative Leader is tasked with cultivating strategic partnerships with external entities and collaborating with internal departments to enhance teaching, research, and community engagement initiatives. This role ensures stability within the department during transitional periods.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Planning and Development
- Offer strategic, confidential counsel to the Department Chair and Associate Chairs in formulating both short- and long-term visions for the department.
- Provide academic administrators with confidential strategies concerning human resources, budgeting, financial oversight, and organizational development.
- Actively participate in the Executive Committee, assisting the Chair with strategic planning efforts.
- Formulate long-term strategies for departmental growth, including program expansion and research initiatives.
- Oversee space management and construction projects to enhance departmental facilities.
- Manage research units and centers, ensuring effective utilization and financial management.
- Direct marketing and communication strategies, including digital presence.
- Plan and execute departmental events and special programs.
- Foster partnerships with community organizations and professional agencies.
Human Resources Management
- Supervise recruitment, onboarding, and professional development of administrative and teaching staff.
- Provide direct oversight to team leads and administrative support staff.
- Assist in faculty recruitment and retention efforts.
- Ensure compliance with university policies and facilitate onboarding processes for new faculty.
- Coordinate with university departments to maintain operational compliance.
- Oversee succession planning discussions.
Financial Oversight
- Establish financial controls to ensure departmental compliance.
- Monitor and manage the annual operating budget.
- Ensure availability of funds for departmental operations.
- Oversee management of various financial accounts.
- Report on the financial status of strategic priorities.
- Develop business plans for anticipated program changes to ensure financial sustainability.
Academic and Research Operations Oversight
- Provide consultation for undergraduate and graduate committees.
- Manage course budgets and scheduling for undergraduate teaching.
- Supervise the coordination of teaching and research operations.
- Oversee purchasing and technical support for lab infrastructure.
- Support faculty research initiatives and compliance with research policies.
Management of Physical Resources and Health and Safety
- Develop initiatives to optimize space and resource utilization.
- Manage space allocations for teaching and research programs.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations in research and teaching labs.
- Supervise safety training and compliance for staff and faculty.
Qualifications
- A master's degree with extensive administrative experience in an academic setting.
- Proven leadership in human resources and administration.
- Additional qualifications in management or communications are advantageous.
- Strong understanding of academic and research environments.
- Proficiency in financial software systems and Microsoft Office.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
