We are seeking a dedicated Mental Health and Substance Use Nurse to provide essential care and support for individuals facing mental health challenges and substance use issues.
Vancouver Coastal Health is in search of a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse to contribute to the Psychiatry In Patient team. This role is vital in delivering comprehensive care to patients at our facility.
Responsibilities of the Mental Health and Substance Use Nurse include:
Deliver tailored nursing care, discharge planning, and case management services to clients experiencing severe mental health disorders, concurrent conditions, and dementia, ensuring a holistic approach to clinical practice and rehabilitation. Enhance the quality of life for clients and their families through compassionate care. Conduct thorough physical and psychosocial rehabilitation assessments. Collaborate with healthcare professionals and family members to create, implement, assess, and adjust personalized strength-based treatment plans. Build and maintain therapeutic relationships grounded in respect and understanding. Administer prescribed medications, monitor client responses, and provide ongoing education to clients and families regarding daily living activities, medication usage, potential side effects, and lifestyle integration. Maintain accurate client records in accordance with established standards, participate in team meetings, engage in strategic planning, and pursue continuous professional development.Additional Information
ABOUT THE ROLE
This position offers the potential for relocation assistance. Nurses may also qualify for student loan forgiveness programs at both provincial and federal levels.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
Active registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). Completion of a minimum of 240 hours of clinical practicum in a mental health environment, supplemented by relevant coursework or equivalent experience.Knowledge & Skills
In-depth understanding of concurrent disorders, substance use and abuse, and harm reduction strategies. Familiarity with psychiatric care models, including person-centered care, trauma-informed approaches, and recovery-oriented practices. Knowledge of the Mental Health Act and its implications for clients and healthcare providers. Awareness of community resources and support systems related to mental health. Ability to assess and address the impact of social, cultural, and familial factors on health outcomes. Proficiency in conducting nursing assessments and interventions, including group facilitation, conflict resolution, and counseling. Capability to develop and implement care plans while anticipating and addressing potential complications. Experience in creating educational materials for clients and families based on best practices. Skill in identifying and mitigating emotional, social, or environmental barriers to care. Competence in documenting client care accurately and promptly in accordance with organizational standards. Ability to manage conflict and aggressive behavior using non-violent intervention techniques. Experience in mentoring new staff and students in clinical settings. Proficiency in performing clinical techniques relevant to the designated client population.Closing Statement
