The Senior Mental Health Counselor (Mental Health Specialist V) engages in advanced psychological and therapeutic practices under the guidance of a licensed Psychologist.

This role involves offering expert consultation on behavioral strategies for patients throughout the facility. Responsibilities include recovery planning, therapeutic counseling, documentation, and the development of behavior management plans. The position requires a high level of independence and accuracy, with potential responsibilities for planning, assigning, and supervising the work of others. Minimal supervision is provided, allowing for significant initiative and independent judgment.


Additional responsibilities may include participating in disaster response efforts and supporting the agency's Continuity of Operations (COOP) plans, which may necessitate flexible shift assignments or location changes.


This position may also qualify for additional compensation for work conducted in maximum security settings.


Key Responsibilities:

Regular attendance is essential, and you may be required to adhere to a specific shift schedule, including rotating shifts or overtime as per agency policy.

Conduct psychological activities under the supervision of a licensed Psychologist, including individual, group, and family therapy for referred patients.

Collaborate with families and recovery team members to provide essential information and assist with discharge planning.

Develop individualized Person-Centered Recovery Plans, incorporating patient goals, identifying barriers, and establishing relevant objectives and interventions.

Interview referred patients and recommend appropriate treatments to support their stability and recovery goals.

Create and facilitate specialized psychoeducational groups aimed at enhancing patient knowledge and skills for recovery.


Conduct interviews and review patient records to assist in diagnostic clarification and recovery planning, participating in recovery team meetings and complex case discussions.


Formulate individual behavior plans to address challenging behaviors such as aggression or self-harm, collaborating with staff to implement and monitor these plans effectively.

As needed, perform psychological assessments, including test administration and interpretation, under the supervision of a licensed Psychologist.

Engage in quality assurance and enhancement activities related to psychological services and treatment across the facility, which may involve chart audits and service reporting.


Additional duties may include participating in disaster response efforts and supporting the agency's Continuity of Operations (COOP) plans, which may require flexible shift assignments or location changes.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Comprehensive understanding of psychology and related fields.

Familiarity with treatment methodologies and practices.

Proficient interviewing skills.

Ability to conduct diagnostic interviews effectively.

Competence in delivering individual, group, and family psychotherapy.

Capability to develop and oversee rehabilitation activities focused on skill acquisition and behavior management.

Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of others.
