The City of Burnaby is dedicated to providing exceptional service to our community.

We seek individuals who share our commitment to excellence and have the ambition to contribute to our outstanding team.

This role involves advanced professional planning responsibilities at a supervisory level. The selected candidate will be tasked with developing conceptual plans and implementation strategies, along with executing timelines and coordinating activities among various internal and external stakeholders.

The position of Senior Urban Planner is distinguished from that of a Planner 2 by the added responsibility of overseeing professional and technical staff, as well as a higher degree of independent decision-making in managing section operations.

A Senior Urban Planner will plan, assign, supervise, and engage in the work of professional and technical personnel involved in researching and preparing intricate development plan concepts, ensuring the efficient and orderly processing of necessary implementation steps.

This role also involves coordinating activities across various sections of the planning department and other municipal departments, as well as external agencies related to program implementation. Establishing and maintaining effective communication with various stakeholders, government bodies, boards, commissions, and committees is essential, along with participating in public meetings as needed.

Additional responsibilities include representing the Planning Department on various boards, commissions, or committees as directed, and preparing and presenting planning reports that are particularly complex or sensitive in nature. Other related duties may be assigned as required.

Qualifications for this position include a university degree in a relevant field, complemented by a postgraduate degree in Community and Regional Planning, along with significant professional planning experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Thorough knowledge of municipal planning principles, practices, techniques, methods, and procedures is essential, as well as familiarity with the policies, regulations, by-laws, and legislation governing section operations and planning department functions.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of economics, municipal finance, and sociology, along with current trends and developments in the field. They should be capable of performing professional planning and supervisory tasks with minimal oversight and establishing effective working relationships with staff and external contacts.

A Senior Urban Planner will also have the ability to represent the Director and act on behalf of a supervisor as required, demonstrating creativity and professional expertise in analyzing and evaluating data for complex solutions. Membership or eligibility for membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners is a prerequisite.

We are committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workforce that reflects the vibrant community we serve. We embrace diversity and strive to build an inclusive environment that celebrates the richness of our community.

We welcome applicants of all genders, ages, ethnicities, cultures, abilities, sexual orientations, and life experiences to contribute to a more vibrant and equitable future.

Copies of relevant professional certificates, degrees, or tickets will be required at the time of the interview.

We appreciate all applicants for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
