About the Role

The Stationary Engine Mechanic will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of central heating and cooling plants at various government facilities. This is a critical role that requires a high level of technical expertise and attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain plant equipment and systems, including boilers, chillers, generators, and distribution systems.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, emergency repairs, and overhauls of plant equipment.
  • Conduct standardized tests to determine chemical concentrations in water and adjust chemical feed rates.
  • Investigate reports and take action on conditions that affect the safety and security of the plant and staff.
  • Prepare incident reports and perform housekeeping duties.
  • Responsible for a shift log that details plant operating conditions and matters that may affect plant safety and security.
  • Make tours of inspection, record observations, and ensure that readings on instruments and gauges comply with regulations, operating procedures, and occupational health and safety standards.
  • Interpret information for colleagues, clients, and supervisors on operational issues, deficiencies, or changes in normal operations and new equipment.
  • Troubleshoot to identify mechanical equipment problems and implement solutions to prevent damage to the plant and equipment, increased operating costs, and the interruption of service to clients.

Requirements

  • Stationary Engineman certification (MMF class 4)
  • Significant knowledge of the operation of heating and cooling plant equipment and systems.
  • Knowledge of testing methods to carry out tests on mechanical equipment and water samples.
  • Knowledge of administrative practices to prepare work orders and documents, compile operational data for monthly reports, and write reports with recommendations.
  • General knowledge of federal and provincial regulations related to environmental standards and occupational health and safety in plant operations.
  • Skills needed to start up and shut down large oil and gas fired boilers and generators, adjust controls that regulate output, perform preventive maintenance, and remove and replace parts.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills for troubleshooting activities.
  • Ability to work with a variety of computer software programs.
  • Manual dexterity to repair and overhaul operating plant and extensive distribution systems equipment, pumps, valves, expansion joints, and fans.
  • Written and verbal communication skills to record information in a written shift log, prepare reports, complete various forms, time sheets, travel claims, and procurement documents.
