Job Overview:
This position is responsible for supporting and advising on matters arising from Real Estate and Franchising in support of our Tim Hortons, Burger King, Popeyes and Firehouse Subs brands.
Key Responsibilities:
- Advise on legal and business issues/strategies in various areas including real estate (development, asset management and property management), franchising, and operations.
- Liaise with outside real estate counsel and internal departments, acting as a valued business partner while advising and adding value to legal matters.
- Prepare, review, negotiate and execute high volumes of legal agreements including agreements of purchase and sale, leases, lease renewals & extensions and franchising documents (license / franchise agreements, etc.), with a strong attention to detail and a view to managing risk while maximizing benefits to the business.
- Manage disputes and litigation matters, as necessary, both internally and externally.
- Keep abreast of pending legislation or regulatory rules impacting our business and communicate as necessary.
- Prepare general correspondence for internal and external stakeholders.
- Special projects as assigned.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree or Juris Doctor and a member in good standing with a provincial or territorial law society.
- 3+ years of experience in commercial real estate and development, with a reputable law firm or in-house.
- In-depth experience in drafting, reviewing, negotiating and enforcing a high volume of legal agreements in English.
- Demonstrated client focus, proven relationship building and interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to work with levels of senior management and provide legal counsel.
- Well-developed problem-solving skills, able to provide innovative client-focused solutions and manage the balance between legal risk and revenue generation.
- Highly motivated, innovative and efficient with a strong track record of excellence and the ability to adapt to change.
- Comfortable working in an open-concept, team environment.
- Related experience in retail or quick service restaurant industries is preferred.
