Company Overview

Torstar is dedicated to enhancing local journalism in communities that have been historically underserved across Canada.

We are currently in search of a motivated and enthusiastic reporter with a background in journalism or a related field for a distinctive opportunity.

In this full-time temporary role, you will be tasked with generating a minimum of 5-7 articles weekly, which will be published online. Your stories may also be featured in various Torstar publications and platforms. Additionally, your work will be disseminated through the LJI portal to other media organizations.

This position emphasizes community-centric reporting, focusing on issues that affect the Niagara region and its civic institutions.

Role Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate a strong interest in reporting on local government and community matters.
  • Capture high-quality photographs for publication.
  • Develop innovative and engaging story concepts.
  • Possess a solid understanding of Canadian Libel Law and Canadian Press Style.
  • Collaborate with the managing editor to consistently deliver compelling and relevant news stories through various mediums.
  • Produce high-caliber, reliable journalism utilizing excellent reporting and research skills, including data interpretation.
  • Create captivating multimedia content for the website and social media channels, including video and audio segments.
  • Travel within the community to document events and gather information outside of standard working hours, including evenings and weekends.

Candidate Qualifications

  • Minimum of one year of experience in a newsroom setting.
  • Strong skills in interviewing, social media engagement, and online journalism.
  • Proven ability to exercise sound news judgment and a robust work ethic.
  • Proficiency in photography.
  • Capability to function effectively in a virtual newsroom environment.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Access to a vehicle and a valid driver's license is required.
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly in written form (Canadian Press Style).
  • Strong organizational abilities, with a knack for managing time and prioritizing tasks effectively.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented atmosphere.
  • A team player who can cultivate professional relationships with colleagues.
