Job Title: Director, Policy and Strategic Development

Job Summary:

The Government of Nova Scotia is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director, Policy and Strategic Development to lead our efforts in advancing gender equity and promoting the well-being of women and girls in Nova Scotia.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead Strategic Policy Research and Development: Develop and implement evidence-based policies and strategies that align with the Government of Nova Scotia's priorities and advance the interests of women and girls, particularly those from historically underserved communities.
  • Direct Research and Analysis: Conduct in-depth research and analysis on complex policy issues, providing expert advice and actionable recommendations to senior leaders and government decision-makers.
  • Cultivate Community Partnerships: Foster and maintain partnerships with community organizations, stakeholders, and government agencies to strengthen policy frameworks and deepen understanding of issues impacting women.
  • Engage in Advocacy and Representation: Represent the Government of Nova Scotia's priorities at national forums and advocate for the advancement of women and girls, with a focus on equity-deserving communities.
  • Co-Lead Evaluation and Progress Tracking: Collaborate with colleagues to evaluate strategic plans, track progress towards key milestones, and make necessary adjustments to ensure effective implementation.
  • Oversee Public-Facing Resources: Ensure the accuracy and effectiveness of the Government of Nova Scotia's public-facing resources, contributing to the management of human and financial resources.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in social or gender studies, law, public administration, or a related field.
  • Leadership Experience: Several years of leadership experience in senior roles where you have led policy and program design, development, research, and analysis.
  • Policy Expertise: Strong policy expertise, with experience collaborating with government and community, analyzing complex issues, identifying opportunities, and providing sound, evidence-based recommendations.
  • Communication and Advocacy Skills: Exceptional communication and advocacy skills, with a proven ability to engage and influence senior leaders, government decision-makers, and community partners through written, oral, and presentation abilities.
  • Problem-Solving and Partnership-Building: A creative and strategic problem-solving approach to address sensitive issues and recommend impactful actions, as well as the ability to purposefully build partnerships and networks, creating trust and shared meaning with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Leadership and Team Management: Proven leadership skills, including the ability to lead and motivate teams, and coordinate efforts with a broad network of government and community-based individuals and organizations.
  • Gender Equity and Intersectionality: A deep understanding of gender equity and intersectionality, including the ability to integrate these principles into policy research and development.
  • Experience with Equity-Deserving Communities: Experience successfully advancing policies, programs, and initiatives that advance the interests of equity-deserving communities, in particular Mi'kmaq and African Nova Scotian people.

Assets:

  • Experience in the Gender-Based Violence Sector: Experience in the gender-based violence sector, as this role involves informing recommendations and advice on the intersection between safety and economic security.
  • Understanding of the Office's Current Legislation, Programs, and Policies: An understanding of the Government of Nova Scotia's current legislation, programs, and policies.
